rusty screw/nuts for muffler

Hi,
I notice that some of screws/nuts that hold muffler and pipe are rusty
and need replacement. My car is 2000 Corolla, and I am wondering what
the size of those screws/nuts are and whether they have to be
"extremely heat resistant" and whethere they can be purchased at local
auto store or store like homedepot?
Thanks.

They're most 40%~50% gone, at the other handle, will it cause flame if
using WD 40 later when I start driving?

no, I doubt very seriously you'd have to worry about flame. Wow...
that far gone on a 2000?

Re: rusty screw/nuts for muffler

Toyota uses a one piece exhaust on nearly all models --- so they must be the
nuts connecting it to the catalytic converter? I'd replace them with brass
or stainless steel (if OEM then they are metric threads)..

Buy Muffler Clamps at the auto parts store.

Frankly, unless they are broken and falling off, you are best to just leave
them alone.

Jim, did your Muffler Clamp break? Is that what the problem is?

Ooops Jeff

I notice only the screws/nuts, not the clamp. When I touch screws/nuts
with my finger, some rusty stuff starts falling off. The clamp looks OK
to me. I am just wondering what the size of those screws/nuts.

2 ways to get the screw and nut sizes:

1) go to a Toyota dealer and ask their parts department
2) put a wrench or socket on the nut and bolt head - it will be 8, 10, 12,
04 14 mm. Most likely 10 mm.

Nothing special about the nuts and bolts. If you want something that will
last a little longer, buy stainless steel ones.

If the old ones are that rusted, you will probably have to cut them off.

hmmm...

You sure that's not just rusty-looking grit or clay?

Re: rusty screw/nuts for muffler

Thanks everyone.
I may ask dealer to do it later. Last time they did replaced one
screw/nut, they charged me over $30.

Heat helps. If the bolt/stud isn't too big, a propane torch will be enough.
But lately, I've been able to get some pretty rusted (but not salt rusted)
bolts off without any trouble.
