96' Corolla gas octane info needed?

I bought a used Corolla 1.6L recently. It doesn't have a manual. So can
anyone telll me what is he best gas to use. I have been using 87
unleaded. But typically on my 1st car a civic. I used 89. What is the
best grade to use. I don't mind paying a little extra, to get the extra
mileage.

Regular (87) is what the manual says --- any other on that year is waste of
$. Newer cars with more advanced computers will give more power with higher
octane but not a 96.

87 octane would be fine for your car.

Use 87 octane in North America (R+M/2 octane measurement).
89 doesn't get you anything but a bigger bill with this engine.
85 is fine at high altitude.

87 should be fine.

Paying more for gas will not provide extra mileage, so you are effectivly
throwing money away to buy a higher grade than the engine asks for.

Thanks for the help. By the way, does anyone recommend those little
containers of STP gas treatment. They are supposed to clean out
deposits in the tank.

That stuff is probably good to use. I do not suggest you buy a case and put
some in at every fill up, but when you change the oil, it would be good to
add a can of gas treatment or two, as a maintenance item.

Only gas additive that I've found to work is Chevron Techron for cleaning
the fuel injectors. Note - Newer cars do benefit from more poser and higher
gas mileage with higher octain gas -- their computers retard/advance the
spark depending on the knock sensors - so if you need the extra power for
carring a full load, going over mountains or towing a trailer the higher
octane does make a difference.

I could argue that, esp on smaller engines.

With my Corolla 1200, I got 39 MPG with 91, 34 with 87
With my Corolla GTS, I get 36 with 93, 31 with 87
With my Tercel I got 45 with 93, 39 with 87
With my 87 Corolla 4DR (carb'd) I got 45 with 93, 36 with 87!!!

Also, I have NEVER had a knock or misfire of any kind in any car I bought
new and used over 90 octane. One exception:
1980 Corolla SR-5 1.8L, 34 with 91/92 octane, 37 with Gasahol...

I agree with Wolfgang about Techron being a good product. The Toyota brand
stuff available from Toyota dealers is also very effective. Make sure you
follow the instructions on the container, especially about using it up in
the specified time.

I would not use fuel additives more than once or twice a year because some
of them have a tendency to eat flexible fuel lines. I've seen gas turn
almost black because the additives were dissolving the flexible fuel lines.
