Getting my evening cup of coffee (see another thread) the girl at the
counter at the convenience store said; "people must have heard about the
price of gas, cause the pumps have been running non-stop for hours." Of
course, I said, "What about the price" and the manager said she had gotten
a call after noon that she would be raising the price ten cents by 11 PM,
and to expect another increase of ten cents by Wed AM, preferrably Tues
before Midnight!
So, according to her, gas here will be $2.85 for reg. unld. Wed AM!!!

Yep. I've been reading today that about 11% of US production disappeared
overnight with the evacuation and shuttering of the gulf refineries.
That's 11% we can't lose without a serious price impact. The spot market is
taking a beating right now; everybody's in panic mode.
I was watching Fox News and saw the gas station marquee that show 2.45
for both unleaded and diesel. Here in No. California yesterday it was
2.80 at 76 for regular and 3.15 for diesel.

Well, it could be worse. Japan is the equivalent of $5.00 a gallon. Or 553
Yen per gallon.

Well, that's likely an Imperial gallon I suppose (thank God for
(very) small mercies) :)

See what happens when the US Government allows the US refineries to
deliberately restrict overall capacity, making them run almost flat
out to barely produce the fuel the nation needs, and has almost NO
refined product stocks on hand following the 'Just in time' model?
One hiccup in the system, and the prices spike for weeks or months -
and gee, isn't it a co-inky-dink that the Oil Companies always manage
to make more money when it happens...? ;-P
Maybe instead of a Strategic Petroleum Reserve, the US Government
should build a good sized Strategic Refined Products Reserve. Then
when the oil companies think they can push their profit margins even
higher this quarter with a conveniently timed hurricane or refinery
fire, the Feds at the SRPR releases a few million barrels of refined
products to the retail market (from the few billion on hand) and push
the prices right back down.
There ARE solutions to this mess, we just have to figure out how to
get the US Govt's collective balls in a wringer tight enough to force
them to write, enact and enforce them.
Federal Initiative Process, anyone?

There is NOTHING that the US Government can/should do.
If the US Government wants to do something worthwhile....it would be
to take the damned stupid regulations off the industry and let them
build plants...
The Government is NEVER the answer...IMHO

Paying NZ$1.42 per litre (US$3.70 per US gallon) here in NZ, for 91 (low
octane). The highest it's ever been.

$1.42NZD is worth $3.70USD? Is it still based on the Pound? (Or tied to
the Pound?)
