Knock sensor help

O.K., I need some help here (again). I need to know the EXACT location of
the knock sensor on a '92 Celica 5SFE. I'm getting a code 52 which I believe
is the knock sensor. If you know the exact location of his sensor, please
let me know. If you don't really know, Thanks anyways ... I already know
that it is in either the head, the block, or the intake. I could also use
test procedures if anyone should happen to know. Thanks in advance, Timm
.........

The knock sensor is basically a piezoelectric crystal that operates on the
same principle as those "electronic ignition' lighters and push-button
sparkers on some gas grills. When the crystal is compressed or twisted, the
internal structure of the crystal produces static electricity, which jumps
to a nearby ground point. To test the knock sensor, hook up a digital
meter, preferably with one that records readings, to the leads on the sensor
and rap the block with a hammer. You should get momentary milivolts
readings when you rap the block.

I don't recall the exact location of the sensor, but it will be on the side
of the block and will have 1 or 2 wires coming out. I believe that the
knock sensor is the only sensor actually in the side of the block. The oil
pressure sender will be higher up on the block.

The crystal in the knock sensor never wears out so if you're getting a knock
sensor code, a more likely cause for the code will be a bad wire between the
sensor and ECU. Start by checking continuity between the harness where the
sensor plugs in and the ECU, and then check the connector for the sensor and
the pigtail from the sensor to the harness.

Re: Knock sensor help

Ray, thanks for the detailed explanation about this knock sensor. With your
help, I was able to locate it at #3 cylinder on the intake side. Don't know
why I never saw it before. I have been working right there (replaced freeze
plugs) and never even noticed it. Unfortunately, I don't think I will be
able to troubleshoot or repair it, as the next day some guy in a pickup
truck hit me and I believe the car will be totalled. Thanks again for the
info Ray!!! Timm .....
