A good friend at the DCCC posted this on the blog. It quotes a very
.... shall I say, insensitive ... article by George Will of the
Washington Post. Sounds a lot like the kinds of things that our buddy
mike hunt likes to say a lot.
I encourage everyone who thinks that the Superdome wasn't "all that
bad" to view the quicktime movie, if nothing else. I'm FAR from an
Oprah fan, but she gets mad props for this one in my book.

I was touched until race was brought up at the end of the movie. That
put a cold damper on it for me.
I feel sorry for the people though. I hope they can get their live back
to normal as soon as possible.

Again the only thing liberals can fault with is is not the fact that is
not true. It's that it doesn't have the proper "empathy". 70% of all
AFrican American births nationwide are out of wedlock. 50% of all
blacks drop out of high school. Why in the world would you expect
them to be other than disproportionately poor? Oh, I forgot, then you
can't blame Bush. He should invent some magic gov't program to make
people immune to their own actions.

Or *inactions*, as the case may be. Like the stats you just posted, I was
one of those out-of-wedlock people (No two of the four of us have the same
father), but I pulled myself out of that system with education, which is
something that works most of the time. Bill Cosby got a boatload of shit
for saying what needed to be said; blacks *do* sabotage their own children's
future, not only by not encouraging them to better themselves, but by so
many other things, such as giving them pseudo-African names that a potential
employer sees as 'ghetto' - they then discriminate, sometimes without even
consciously meaning to. I'm married to the son of Polish immigrants, so my
surname is decidedly Slavic. I just love the looks on peoples' faces when
they call my name (Say for a doctor's appointment), and they see *me* stand
up. They give me this, "Oh it's not you" look, until I tell them I'm indeed
the person they called. Priceless.
I got my life on the right track *long before* I met my husband, and I'm
convinced that had I not have taken charge of my own future, I'd be the
mother of kids I couldn't afford, working at a dead-end job (If I was
working at all), and hating my life.
I have been truly, indisputably blessed, but I give myself at least a
*little* credit for that great fortune.
Poverty is everyone's problem. You're gonna pay one way or another.
Get that through your thick head, dunce. Just because you walk through
the world with tunnel vision doesn't mean you're being a true fiscal
conservative.

you are exceptional. That is, you are an exception. Don't tell me for
one HOT minute that the unspeakable tragedy that IS most of the poor
children's lives is something that can simply be overcome if they're
only willing to pull themselves up by their own bootstraps.
Its easy for Bill Cosby to wave his wand of judgement. Its not easy
for a three year old kid with a single drug addict mom who just got
raped to take his advice.
No, more likely, we won't pay for that child's care until they hit 18
and get 20 years.
So what I said isn't wrong, but "I'm going to pay", anyway, so I guess
that means whatever the causes of poverty are, you simply can't talk
about them. You're going to pay anyway! That's brilliant, you idiot.
If you want to reduce poverty you have to look at causes, not simply
throw more money at the problem, pat yourself on the back for your
"empathy", and wonder why it doesn't go away. I know why it doesn't!
More programs are needed!
Only an idiot looks at a problem and solutions that don't work and says
to spend even more money on failed programs.

One of the things destroying the Black community in the South is the
attitude that Whitey "owes" them. Why should they work or get married? I
applaude people like Natalie that refuse to get stuck in that rut and refuse
to be stuck in 'victimology'. Some of my ancestors came over at a time when
they too were not really welcomed. Did they become 'victims' and expect a
handout? I don't think so. Did the Germans, the Irish, the Poles expect a
handout when they hit Back of the Yards? Ask their decendants.
Thank God there are a number on both sides of the color line that refuse to
play the blame game, finally, and are doing something that might actually
help! There are increasly more people that are tired of living on the
Liberal-Victimolgy plantation. They may not have 40 acres and a mule yet,
but they're working hard at it and they don't want to go back to no
plantation. . . .
We have to stop sitting on our ass, lighting our Camels and pretend there is
no Promised Land. <g>

Isn't that what the NEA is doing to education, too? Seems to me we've been
throwing money at the problem for at least 40 years now. . . .

Heh - this reminds me of a letter I wrote to the Arizona Republic back in
August 2002. It was published in the AR, and I thought my 15 minutes were
over, but recently I was searching for post I made to another NG, and found
that my op-ed letter still lives LOL:
Your response to looking at WHY there is poverty is to say "you're
going to pay anyway, idiot!" and say someone has tunnel vision. That's
known as an "non sequiter"...your statement doesn't follow logically
from what I said. If you're going to pay anyway, why wouldn't you want
to eliminate the sources of the problem instead of blindly continuing
them (and blaming them on Bush)? You can't quite grasp that. You're
not very smart.
You make no sense. Your greatest accomplishment is "graduating high
school"? Just barely, I'd guess.
George Will wrote a good, intelligent, logical article. It mentioned
some unfortunate truths. Rather than dispute them, you attack him for
mentioning them in the first place. How dare he!! Empathy yes!
Common sense, no. You're a loser.
