I'm in the market for a used Toyota and was wondering what is generally
considered to be the best model for reliability and durability (I want
to drive it til the wheels fall off).

Well....our family has two Toys...
1. '92 Corolla Wagon
2. '97 Corolla Sedan
Both are as good as new.
I'm partial to my '92 Wagon....cause I can sling my kayak up top
easily and throw my mountain bike on a hitch mounted rack on the back.

I just sold an '02 Dodge Grand Caravan on Craig's List after buying an '05
Prius on Ebay. Both worked out very well. Craig's List was very easy to use,
with their form page that accepted my description and 4 pictures of any size
(I think mine were 1024 by 768) and displayed them in their standard size.
The car was sold the day after I put up the ad. The Prius I bought on Ebay
had been stuck in two auctions without reaching the reserve price for 15
days, I guess since it had a salvage title, but the temptation to buy an '05
Prius pkg #3 with 3300 miles on it for $17,000 (the reserve amount) was
irresistible. And the car has proven to be virtually perfect as judged by my
local Toyota dealership through their $116 inspection. So check Ebay and
Craig List http://www.craigslist.org/ when you decide what to buy.

Before I buy any car,I get a copy of the latest Consumer Reports Annual
Auto Issue.
You can get one at the library or buy it at a newstand.
They cover reliability records for all cars from present and going back
6-7 years.
According to them all models for Toyota are equally reliable including the
Trucks.
I've only had my 2000 Camry since May,so far so good,I love it.
Let a mechanic check it out before you buy. They're only reliable if
they've been treated right.
-Good Luck

Generally, any Corolla is pretty bulletproof. Camry's are good also.
Celicas from 99-05 Have 'issues'. Other models I don't know.

Get a corolla. Here's an excellent reference, as Natalie said... I'll
save you a few clicks:
I had a '77 Corolla Wagon, not the liftback but the ugly one. Green
with wood panelling. That damn thing just ran and ran. It would never
die. I ended up selling it for $200 to a friend, last time I saw her
she was still driving it (that was in 1988, it prolly had about 200k by
then).
I have a '95 Corolla now, and the only thing I've had to do with it
other than religious oil changes, is put the "upgraded" tires on it,
speed H rated. That turned it into a zippy little car. Its got under
100k, so I'll prolly have it for another 5 years.
Its the cheapo model corolla... all it has is power assist steering and
AC. I'd tell anyone to buy that model though. You can find one
nowadays for a really great price.

definitely, Craig's List. that's where I found mine. Excellent deals.
That turned it into a zippy little car.

Richard - can you please explain how upgrading the tires made your car
"zippy"?

When you are fixin' to buy ANY used car, Consumer Reports is useless. How
the model was evaluated when new has NO BEARING on the car in front of you.
Have we all not heard that Camrys are low maintenance and nearly bullet
proof? By the same token, the car in front of you might have been owned by
some coupon clipping soccer mom who assumed low maintenance meant NO
maintenance. So there you are, standing in front of a Camry having 25k
miles on the original oil and filter ... with your STUPID Consumer Reports
magazine telling you the model is the best thing they've ever tested. What
rubbish. You examine used cars on an individual basis.

Sure! The tires it had were cheap, and worn out as well. In addition,
I found that they were the smaller of the two possible sizes for the
car I own. So, I went up a size, and bought really good
all-season/performance grade tires, and I noticed that the car rode a
lot smoother at highway speeds. Also, keeping the tires properly
inflated, balanced, and rotated are inexpensive ways to squeeze more
performance and efficiency out of your car.
In the 20 years that I've driven cars, I've determined there are three
things in particular where you don't want to go cheap: brakes, tires,
and battery.
You may want to note -- lest I mislead you, Mark, that putting decent
tires on your car doesn't actually change the basic mechanics of the
engine, it only allows the car to operate more efficiently and ride
more comfortably.
