Prius nav system questions

Re the Toyota navigation system that's optional on the '05 Prius --

Is it installable post-delivery of the vehicle?

Can it guide the driver home without slavishly retracing the outbound
route?

At this point I'm only asking about the Toyota-supplied system.
Depending on the answers, I might come back with follow-up questions
about an after-market unit.

To the best fo my knowledge, no. It is too heavily integrated into the
Bluetooth phone and stereo system plus the microphone is built into the
car's roof area near the front dome light. Steering wheel has control
functions as well.

Yes. Just say "Go Home" after tapping the button on the steering wheel
(another reason for the built-in unit).

Only concerns with the after-market (i.e. Garmin) is the need to hide the
unit if parked and it always looks like an add-on. Also, it doesn't
integrate as well with the car's sound system (i.e. muting and speaking to
it), but it does work very well (I have 3 Garmin units that I use on
motorcycles, fwiw). Garmin routing is better in that it has more routing
capabilities and you can set more than 5 via points or routes. The Toyota
system is "very limited" in that respect (it's made by Denso if I recall).
Oddly, the Toyota offers you three routing tracks where the Garmin only
offers what it calculates.

Maps are supposedly upgradeable yearly by the dealer for a fee. My Prius is
a Package 6 (fully loaded) and I couldn't be happier with the car even
though my actual mileage numbers overall is around 46 mpg. Takes a while to
learn all it will do. The thing sort of trains you to drive according to
the Consumption display.

According to the faq's on Toyota's web page, navigation is only available as
a factory installed option and not afterwards.

That is very helpful information. Thank you.

True. I have a Garmin eMap mounted in my '98 Avalon. With its small B&W
screen it presents less temptation to a miscreant, but of course it has
fewer features too. The remote antenna is in the back window, so the
coverage of the sky is excellent.

The above is important, IMO.

After a month with our Prius (OK, it's my wife's officially) we're
settling into an average 46-ish figure too. Unexpectedly we do the
advertised 50 in the road but fall below that in town.

<Hehe> Yes! Absolutely.

Thanks for the FAQ reminder, Ray. I'll do more research before posting
henceforth. On the plus side, though, B gave me more good stuf than I'd
asked for.

Yes, you can install it. Purchase them here:

much cheaper than the dealer. Check out some of the prius boards like this
one:

www.priusonline.com and talk with the folks that did it..
