Obviously I expecting to see things polarised here.
But, lets ignore the Democrat/Republican thing here.
Don't you think that was a pretty inflametory thing to say. Especially
in that direct fashion, whether you believe that to be a supported
theory or not.

We've hashed this in a couple of threads already. Bill Bennett sad
horrid things, and was swinging the razorblade of racism around about
as irresponsibly as any American ever has.
Hopefully the liberal 527s will get a good sound byte of this and play
it constantly during the 2006 midterm elections.

As usual the media took the entire thing out of context and blew up a
completely ridiculous statement. The man was making a point in relation
to another example.
Statement By Bill Bennett, Sep. 30, 2005
From the Desk of William J. Bennett September 30, 2005
"On Wednesday, a caller to my radio show proposed the idea that one
good argument for the pro-life position would be that if we didn't have
abortions, Social Security would be solvent. I stated my doubts about
such a thesis, as well as my opposition to such a form of argument (the
audio of the call is available at my Website: bennettmornings.com).
"I then stated that such extrapolations of this argument can cut both
ways, and cited the current bestseller, Freakonomics, which discusses
the authors' thesis that abortion reduces crime.
"Then, putting my philosophy professor's hat on, I went on to reveal
the limitations of such arguments by showing the absurdity in another
such argument, along the same lines. I entertained what law school
professors call 'the Socratic method' and what I would hope good social
science professors still use in their seminars. In so doing, I
suggested a hypothetical analogy while at the same time saying the
proposition I was using about blacks and abortion was 'impossible,
ridiculous, and morally reprehensible,' just to ensure those who would
have any doubt about what they were hearing, or for those who tuned in
to the middle of the conversation.
"The issues of crime and race have been on many people's minds, and
tongues, for the past month or so--in light of the situation in New
Orleans; and the issues of race, crime, and abortion are well aired and
ventilated in articles, the academy, the think tank community, and
public policy. Indeed the whole issue of crime and race is not new in
social science, nor popular literature. One of the authors of
Freakonomics, himself, had an extended exchange on the discussion of
these issues on the Internet some years back--which was also much
debated in the think tank community in Washington.
"A thought experiment about public policy, on national radio, should
not have received the condemnations it has. Anyone paying attention to
this debate should be offended by those who have selectively quoted me,
distorted my meaning, and taken out of context the dialogue I engaged
in this week. Such distortions from 'leaders' of organizations and
parties is a disgrace not only to the organizations and institutions
they serve, but to the First Amendment.
"In sum, let me reiterate what I had hoped my long career had already
established: that I renounce all forms of bigotry--and that my record
in trying to provide opportunities for, as well as save the lives of,
minorities in this country stands up just fine."

You're a flat-out liar, Bill Bennett has more integrity and
intelligence in his big toe than you could generate in a thousand
years. Democrats who callously use race-baiting to try and hang on to
their shrinking base are pathetic.

But... even Bush distanced himself from Billy Bennett... doesn't that
mean that ... oh never mind. You don't get it. You're completely
hopeless.

Hi, AssFace:
Here are some quotes from some of your heroes about Billy Bob Bennett:
The comments brought condemnation from all sides. The White House press
secretary, Scott McClellan, said: "The president believes the comments
were not appropriate."
DOH! That's the only Republican I could find that spoke out against
those remarks!

What he said is a true statement.
Look at the population of US Jails and you will see this to be true.
I guess the real thing is to find out why blacks have such a high
crime rate.
Perhaps it is the Democrats and their 'War on Poverty' that has
essentially enslaved blacks with welfare and ruined many black
families.
Everyone screams 'racist' but no one has a solution....except
Republicans.
We got rid of welfare after a two year period. That should work and
is working.

Not in Maine.

Exactly my point, all along, dammit.

We ignore the children. That's why. They're invisible.

Or perhaps it is the Republicans thwarting every good idea we've ever
had.

Get rid of welfare, then join the white-boys-club, even though you have
nothing, and we'll set you free!
Get a clue homey.

down his throat...by the Republicans...

My daughter told me about this, and honestly, it seems to be more of a
really bad choice of words than anything else. I think the guy was trying
to show that dimwit he was talking to how preposterous her theories were,
but tripped on his own words.

I've gotten some feedback from quite a few folks on this whole thing.
The only thing I'm left with is a feeling of anger at the arrogance
Bill Bennett showed by even saying what he said. I find that it is
absolutely ridiculous, and it is symptomatic of the entire Republican
Party's arrogance, as demonstrated by the recent Felony indictment of
our buddy Tom DeLay. They've just gone too far.

Don't you think it would be a bit irresponsible for Democrats to spend
time advancing good ideas in a time when Republicans have run roughshod
over Americans' rights and liberties, in a felonious fashion?
I agree with you -- I knew Clinton would win in 1992 when I watched the
DNC and heard the theme song... no doubt in my mind at that point. It
was feelgood city.
But, we have some major housecleaning to do on the Hill -- and those
problems overshadow anyone's "good ideas" about the future.

Baloney. If you listened to all of Bennett's comments, you would know
that he was making an example of poor logic. He in no way was
advocating the out of contex statement that is being attributed to him.
Bennett is a decent man, and that's comming from a person who
generaly can't stand many right wingers. He essentially was saying
that the logic that the caller was using was as stupid as saying crime
would go down if we aborted all black babies. But of course all the
media and black leaders hear is "black, abort and crime"
