Towing 5000lbs

I own a 2000 V-8 Tundra. I know it is rated at towing over 7000lbs but was
wondering what some of the larger things being towed by people in this group
were and how well they did. I am close to purchasing a 5000lb dry weight
travel trailer and was wondering if I would lag too much up hills and so
forth.

Re: Towing 5000lbs

I have a trailer that weighs about 1500lb and I have loaded it with 2000lb.
I was able to
easily maintain 75 to 80 mph up all hills with that combination and if I
take it easy, the
mileage does not go down much. This would not have the wind drag you would
have with
your travel trailer. To be honest, there was a LOT of power to spare. I
tried this same
load with a F-150 and a 5.0L and it was so under power it was dangerous. I
also went down
to 8 or 9 mpg with JUST the trailer on my Ford. Never mind that it also
took out 3 of the
u-joints!

In short, I would not hesitate to pull 5000lb with my truck even up all the
hills.

Re: Towing 5000lbs

I tow a 25' light TT with my 03 V6 4L 4Rnr with no problem. Weight is
probably 4500# wet. I have a weight distribution hitch with antisway and,
of course, electric brakes on the trailer. Have not attempted to tow it in
the mountains though.

Re: Towing 5000lbs

I have a 2000 Tundra w v-8 and tow a 31 foot 'light' TT that weighs
proly 6200 lbs fully loaded. On straight level roads, no problems.
On hills it does struggle a bit. The trailer has a hitch weight of 580
lbs (my hitch has the weight distribution and sway bars etc etc) and it
does cause a fair amount of sag and makes the handling a little
squirrly at times. To answer your question, I dont think you will have
a problem. Im looking at upgrading the brakes, getting stiffer
springs, and doing an engine chip upgrade along with headers and a cat
back exhaust - but that is for my situation, which is traveling almost
every weekend. Give it a go, should be fine

Re: Towing 5000lbs

Another consideration is to get a 5th wheel trailer vice a tow TT. They are
easier to tow and maneuver.

Re: Towing 5000lbs

What hitch are you using? Dual cam or friction control anti sway?
