4Runner Rear Brake Question

Today I inspected my rear brakes on my 1996 4Runner. There appeared to
be an oily sludge on the inside of the drum and on the pads. This was
the same on both right and left rear drum brakes. Does this sound like
there is something wrong?

Re: 4Runner Rear Brake Question

You'll have brake dust in there but it shouldn"t be oily or greasy.

Re: 4Runner Rear Brake Question

this is could be axle seals also if its wheel cylinders just peel back the
cylinder dust seal back and see if there is any fluid there should be none.

Re: 4Runner Rear Brake Question

Had this problem on my '97 4Runner [RIP]. It was the axle seals.
Potentially dangerous because of loss of braking. You'll probably have to
replace the brake pads as well because of the contamination.
