Timing Belt Inspection???

Recently purchased a '96 T100 with a 3.4 V6 engine. The Truck is clean and
appears to be well maintained but has 140k + miles and I am concerned about
the timing belt . Hate to put down 250 + $ right now and was wondering if it
would make sense to have someone pull the Tbelt cover and inspect the belt
or will that cost as much as replacing the belt?

TIA

Replace the belt IMO. It was due at 75K for that year. My 99 Taco is
due at 90K according to the manual. They are supposed to be
non-interference engines and will only leave you stranded if it breaks.
But, why pay the tow charge?

I am going to replace the hoses, water pump and other belts on mine when
the timing belt is replaced.

The previous ignored the maintenance program because he was trading it
away!
Use excel, build a spreadsheet that calls out the recommended
procedures, at the designated intervals. It's your responsibility. Now
you book the work. And simple. If you want a template e-mail me. Do
you have the maintenance records? Did you check them?
Vehicles are an investment. Follow the proscribed maintenance &
intervals and hope to defer major problems. We can only hope.
happy driving

It does make sense to have the belts and waterpump replaced while they are
doing the timing belt. But the dealer here charges the same to have the pump
replaced no matter if the belt is replaced at the same time or not. So I
saved absolutely no money.

Mine says they will not charge the water pump labor if I do it when the
timing belt is replaced. Ditto for the labor on the other belts. They
will charge labor on the hose replacemnt.

Don;

If you've got an Excel template you like and use, how about making it
generally available?

If you can't clip it here, or point to it, may I email you a request?

Thanks,
Richard

Re: Timing Belt Inspection???

98 3.4L.......139K I did my first belt at 90+, at 138k, my radiator was
leaking, so when having it replaced, I had a water pump thrown in as well,
and for another $40. did the belt again......the whole deal ran me under
$600.( my mechanic ) Called 3 dealers, best price was $1500. At 140k+, I
would assume it was done when called for, but if no
documentation........your call. But if you DO have it changed, look at the
water pump too

I'm guessing that recommended service & intervals vary depending on
model and year. I'll try & whip up a generic one that folks can
modify. I'll e-mail you a beta version in a couple of days.
cheers

Re: Timing Belt Inspection???

Don,

That'd be great. Pretty sure I could take your's, make the generic Beta
and send it back to you for checking/ideas.. Either way... thanks.
