help please.

I work for a towing company and i have a problem. One of my employees
towed a 2000 toyota 4-runner from the rear with the transmission in
neutral and the transfer case in 2hi, the key on ACC. My problem is
that he traveled around 150 miles and when he got back to the shop,
the transmission was totally fried. The owner is trying to tell me
that he is responsable for the damaged transmission. I tried to
explain to him that it is nearly impossible for you to fry the
transmission in this manner. The driver said he read the owners
manual and it told him to haul it just like he did. Any help from the
toyota camp would help me save the driver the cost of a new
transmission.

I think you are screwed on this one. He should have used a tow dolly
or a flat bed to haul it that far or towed it from the front with
drive shaft removed or Tcase in netral. Since it was in accessory too
any automatic 4x4 functions may have tried to work too. You will loose
this one in court. Bite the bullet and fix the car and move on and do
not repeat the mistake.

I suspect that the front hubs may have been locked in and that has caused
the transmission to turn. Check to see if theres manual hubs on the front.

If this is the case, your up for a new trannie sorry.

Thank YOU. You've just confirmed my belief that given a choice between
towing with a hook, or leaving the vehicle on the side of the road until a
flatbed can be found, even if it means the vehicle might be vandalized,
choice B is preferable.
