22RE ignition coil igniter

How can an igniter be tested? Are they prone to breakage or wearing out? I
am replacing the distributor and coil on my 1991 toyota pickup but am
shocked to learn a new igniter is about $485.00!

Please advise me on whether it's worth it to replace or not. Also are there
different igniters for the same model year? My dealer parts guy asked me
for the VIN to match the parts. I am thinking of buying some from a junk
yard for the future if this part is known to go bad after a while.

On my 93 22re I was unable to find a way to test the igniter to see if
it was the cause of an intermittent misfire. I bought one at a wrecking
yard, which didn't fix the problem. It turned out the ECM was causing
the problem.

BTW I'll make you a good deal on a known good coil/ignititor that I
didn't need.

Thanks for the perspective. I already bought a new coil and distributor
housing. Hopefully it fixes my problem.
Thanks for the offer but I won't be needing them.

on my 89 22re I'm having an intermittent spark issue. I replaced the coil and igniter from a wrecking yard. I still have the same problem. I just went through the ignition system and did the resistance checks that were listed. The Chilton's manual, which sucks, said that there should be no continuity between the negative terminal on the coil and the body of the igniter. I do have this. I did the tests when the car was refusing to start. I'm not sure that I trust Chilton. Should there be no continuity?

I too was having misfire problems, then a no start, then running for 200 miles, then misfiring again
now DEAD no start. I did the cap, the rotor, the coil, and I DO see spark when I jump a wire to the engine.
but it wont start. please don't tell me its the ecm... any help on this would be appreciated.
sometimes when it cranks I get a mini spark for a quick blip, then nothing.

please drop me a line steve226b@aol.com, for any tips. I've checked all the fuses for the ecm I did think it might have been that. unless I've missed something. these parts are way too expensive to guessing at this
or that.
any idea what an ecm might run? I shutter to think
