1990 4runner wont move:(

I was on the highway yesterday and driving along when it started smoking
and I pulled over and it wouldnt move anymore. I towed it home and
transmission fluid is full but the level doesnt seem to move on the
dipstick and the fluid is not getting hot no matter how long I let the
truck sit running(I left it running for an hour in park). All the gears
feel like neutral. I have revved it up in drive and reverse and low to
see if it moved even a little but nothing. Its a v6 automatic. I have
to press the button by the side of the shifter to disengage it from park
because the switch that did it electronically when you pressed the brake
no longer works...would this have anything to do with it?? Thanks:)

Have you looked to see if the linkage is moving from your shifter to the
transmission?

FWIW: Smoking - from where?

Hello:) The linkage is moving in the transmission. It was smoking from
the transmission. I think the pump is not pumping the transmission
fluid at all because the reading on the stick is always the same with
the vehicle cold or warmed up for an hour. Is the pump accessible
through the pan on the bottom of the transmission??? Thanks for the

Wish I had better news but the smoke you saw was most likely caused
by the tranny slipping and the burning the clutch plates. Trust me it
has NOTHING to do with your pump. It is only accesable by removing the
tranny and then removing it from the bell housing. The transmission
will need to be rebuilt and make sure you take this unit to a well
qualified professional...sorry no shade tree work will get ya going.
Unless you are leaking fluid...you can let it run 3 days and your fluid
level will not change. Well at least no more than a half pint just
because of heat expansion from the fluid itself. Sorry guy...that ones
gonna cost ya.
