84 Cressida timing belt??

Hi all!!

I am new to the forum as this is my first post and I am glad to have found this site.I just purchased a cherry 84 cressida that has 120K miles on it,it runs strong but leaks oil.

I looked at the timing belt cover and see it was changed at 62,000 miles. Is this due for a new one or do you change them every 80,000 miles. The engine is a SOHC 6 and runs very good.If I wait till the belt fails will there be engine damage??Any info is appreciated and thanks in advance.

that should be a 4m-e in that car and if that is the case then you don't have a timing belt you have a timing chain.

Thanks for the info.
Does the chain need to be changed on a regular basis as with a belt??

No it doesn't. The only time you replace the timing chain is when it gets a lot of slack in it. You will notice the engine running really sluggish and it will be out of time sometimes. Really I wouldn't worry about it. My celica has a 22R in it and it has a chain and it is on the original chain and it has 137K on it.

Ok if you have a 5mge then you have a DOHC and not a SOHC and you have a timing belt and not a timing chain. Therefore you shold changed your belt every 60K miles
