about the only thing you can do with your current engine that's worth the money is swap in a 5-speed and upgrade to a good 2.25" or crappy 2.5" exhaust. Don't bother with the intake, the stock system pulls cold air and isn't the restriction. if you're going to turbo it, swap a new turbo engine in. don't bother turboing your current 7m.

ive been looking at doing a swap and found a couple 7m gte's that run around $2000 with five speed
since this is my girlfriends car most likely she is going to want to keep the slushbox transmission
but can it stand up to a turbo charged engine?

yes. Toyota used the A340 in just about everything RWD or 4WD till they started using the 5 speed auto derived from it. the MKIII supra turbo auto trans is identical to the one in your Cressida now. Just don't go wild as they're ok to about 350 or 400 hp ---this is what I've heard here and there, not confirmed--- you'll definitely want to go with an aftermarket trans cooler but have the trans oil go through the aftermarket cooler then through the stock one in the lower tank of the radiator, then back to the trans. Like other kinds of oil, it does its job best "at operating temperature" so you don't want to over-cool it.

for the 7mgte the single biggest thing (other than upgrading the head gasket) you can do, that you'll partially have to do anyway, is aftermarket exhaust. the stock stuff necks down to 2.25". use an aftermarket elbow and do 3" back for a pretty significant gain over the supra system.
