Two problems on my 1985 Cressida

Problem #1.

I'd used to get an occasional lifter knock (I think that's what the noise was) upon startup. After changing the front main seal, cam seals, oil pump seal and timing belt, this noise is completely gone. The engine seems to run better than ever, but as soon as the engine reaches 1800 rpms, the check engine light comes on every time. The only other thing I did was clean out the PCV orfices.

Problem #2.

I can't pull an error code. The diagnostic connector under the hood doesn't do anything to the check engine light and there's no voltage there. If I can solve this part, it will probably guide me to the other problem.

Thanks to anyone taking the time to respond to this.

Are sure you're shorting the diagnostic connector pins T1 to Te1 then turn the key on without starting the engine (key on engine off or KOEO)? if you are, one of the conditions to go into diagnostic mode isn't being met. they are:
-battery voltage above 11v (test with voltmeter)
-throttle plate closed (IDL cirtcuit has to be closed) test TPS with voltmeter... possible to bypass it
-trans in P or N
-AC switch off
-engine at operating temp (I've tested it at room temp so this one is dubious)
