2nd Generation Stalling vacuum issues revisited 82 cress

Had taken the VCV valve and EGR vac mod off the 199k 82 cressida and plugged up the empty hoses with screws then used vacuum plastic cap stops which worked great until they fell off and caused stalling put the screws back and used tighter caps but it still died wouldent right itself last night.

brought it in where they just raised the idle to 900 and cleaned some air idleing valve but they arent sure...

Except that its not a vacuum issue....they say....

Ill just leave it at that ...

If only you were closer could be a number of things. AFM out of alignment, vacuum leaks between the AFM and TB, bad TPS

-I hope you didn't give them any money...
-tell them to fix the idle (NOT 900 rpm). don't ever mess with the idle stop screw. the thing they cleaned is the Idle air control valve or IACV. given their track record so far I certainly wouldn't 100% trust their "it's not a vacuum leak" diagnosis. unfortunately you'll either have to find someone nice like me or pay for a decent diagnosis

Ok, ill say that i didnt spend 103$ for all that..it'll make us both feel better!

I have spent over 2 K at this mech, they have the rep as one of the best (busiest) Mechs in Seattle but now i just dont see the passion for the car anymore and when oh (sorry) if it stalls ill be very ticked.
Why they didint try to diagnose better...?

Glad you gave me all those acronyms can you decipher those if i dont find them in the Haynes?

At least i can get busy trying find and diagnose those...so you are helping and i did get a hold of the Haynes Manuel (10$) wow, what a difference..

Sad days for the cress and for me..

lol sorry
TB: throttle body
AFM: air flow meter
TPS: throttle position sensor
IACV: idle air control valve

They probably have that much business with newer cars that you can plug a scanner. Most shops aren't any good at diagnosing and fixing cars that the computer doesn't tell them what to look for and fix.

82 cress stall is beyond anyones recogniscence?

BLAST!!!! Another day another stall.. three times..

im definitely going to call up my mech and ask them why i spent 103$ for nothing and what they did exactly...and what idea they have.

seems to happen at low speeds then has trouble turning over again and it stresses out the battery, then i do get it going and i race it home and it stalls when i get to my parking spot then wait and it starts up again.

The 95 celica thats been sitting for a year looks good right now for a 1000.

Well talked to the guy and he says its not a vaccum issue but his worry is the parts, it can be fixed though but i may move on.

Could you give the locales of all those Throttle body and such? And how should i test them?

Thank you?

Could it be the ignition coil ?
An an overheating coil gives similar symptoms - engine dies at random times then recovers a minute later after the coil cools down a little.

pull the fuel line, run it to a can. manually activate the fuel pump (B+ to Fp terminals in the underhood diagnostics connector) till it's less than 1/2 tank then proceed to step 2. if it's less than half a tank, just fill up with new stuff and drive almost empty. drive it nice for a day to clear the brakes, rust, etc. then change the oil. rest of the tank drive it like you stole it then change the fuel filter, then drive however you want.
