USA '89 Cressida Whistle

I have an '89 Cressida with 91k original miles on it. The car is great, but it whistles any time I go over 65mph or if I catch a cross wind. I think I have pin-pointed the problem to a large plastic plate under the engine compartment that is warped. I asked my mechanic about removing it, but he said that it is part of the cooling and the engine will overheat if I take it off. Has anyone ever had this happen? Does this cover have any other purpose besides keeping garbage out of the engine compartment? Thanks in advance for your answers.

I have been running without a plastic plate cover for over 2 years now, in 40C (104F) heat I have no problems
but yeah your mechanic is right, it helps with the cooling
try finding a better one at the wreakers

it's not like some cars that WILL overheat without it but it does help. also lends to underbody aerodynamics (fuel economy) and keeping crap out of the engine bay. basically, yes you can remove it and you probably won't notice a big difference

Actually, removing it has helped out quite a bit. Now I can go over 65mph and not be deafened by the loud whistle. It seriously was driving me looney. I also haven't noticed any difference in temp. Thanks for the info about the part.
