Question Cressida running rough

Hello guys i am new to this forum. a week ago i purchased a 1990 toyota cressida. Its got 56K all orginal california miles on it. However i think it has a few issues. First off, the brake and gas pedal are very firm. The engine runs a bit rough i think its the distributor but im not sure. There is a bit of steering play. Is it normal for cressidas to have firm brake and gas pedals? what do i neeed to do to make the engine run smooth because when i drive it it feels rough. the button on the drivers side door dor the automatic door locks looks to be faulty because on occasion when i press the button to lock the doors the locks immediately unlock themselves. So i have to lock the doors using the key and when i do that the security light does not come on. BUt, when the door lock button does work, the security light does come on. What is causing this? Can someone please help. Answers can be sent to my email address : 2006limited@gmail.com

the running rough issue could be any number of issues though very seldomly is it the distributor. cap, rotor, plugs, wires, vacuum leak, poor compression on a cylinder, or the very common blown head gasket (or BHG). take the spark plugs out, check them (ie: look at them) and while they're out, check the compression. exact number isn't as important as they they're similar. other ways to check for bhg would be to start the car and let it warm up a little with the radiator cap off. if it starts bubbling (steadily), you've got bhg. open the oil cap and look for milkshake looking crud under it or in the valve cover. before you ask more or how to, look here: http://cygnusx1.net/Supra/Library/TSRM/MK3/ and go through the troubleshooting sections.

Thanks for this help. See, the car vibrates or the body vibrates slightly when its in drive and only when you come to a full stop. When i drive it theres no vibration so i doubt its the headgasket. the radiator cap is clean and so is the oil cap. No sludge anywhere. No smoke from exhaust. My mechanic told me to change the motor mounts? Can they be the culprit. I checked my motor mounts, there so clean as well as the entire car, that youd never think its motor mounts? Car has 56K miles on it. all original californian. Let me know what you think ASAP. Thanks.
-Mike.

the motor mounts are a structural deal, not cosmetic. they can look great but not be functional. nevertheless, the car shouldn't vibrate too bad even if it had solid motor mounts. they may be A problem but they are not THE problem.

as for the trans pan, dealer or junkyard. www.rockauto.com MIGHT have it.

I need to replace the wiper blades on my 90 Cressida. I unscrewed the whole assembly today from the windshield because the two screws that hold each wiper in place wont budge. I dont know how to install a refill blade and i dont know how to unscrew the screws that hold the wiper. I am afraid that i might damage the screws and wont be able to unscrew them at all. Does a refill come with the metal frame and the blade or just the blade by itself? Thanks guys.

wiper refills do not come with the metal frame. you shouldn't need to undo any screws though. there should be a plastic tab where the wiper frame connects to the arm that you pull up and it just pops off the arm.

I recommend toyota but for a daily driver I doubt aftermarket ones will go bad before the cars junk. when I swap motors I plan on using solid or near solid aftermarket mounts so I hadn't looked into it extensively.

the cap doesn't advance the timing, you have to turn the whole distributor. the bolt down where it meets the head is the one you want to loosen then turn the whole distributor. roughly the middle of the slot is where stock timing (10*) is. all the way clockwise (I think) is advanced, so ccw would be to retard the timing.

carbon or soot on the plugs has a lot more to do with fuel ratios and oil leaks (in a 20 year old engine? never...) than timing. retarded timing will make them worse but it's not the cause of the problem.

LOL no. you'll have to get an aftemrarket keyless entry. Cressida never came with keyless anything, at least not on this continent.
