84 Cressida tranny problem??

As I was going down the road today I heard what sounded like a snap and the transmission no longer functioned,no Forward or reverse. This is a 84 Cressida with auto and 120k miles on it.My initial thought was total blown tranny but I am hoping that is not the case.I am thinking either a band in the auto or a linkage problem.Right now you can shift thru the gears with the shifter and the motor running and get no response.Any info or thought is appreciated,I am not sure I want to put a new box in.Thanks in advance! If more info on tranny model is needed I can get it,not a nice way to spend a Sunday, getting towed home.

Looked under the car yet?

Are you getting any driveshaft movement aft of the tranny, or audible clue that there is anything moving inside the tranny?
Maybe you've simply snapped a worn out u-joint on the way to (or after) the differential. That would be extremely cheap to fix.
I think it's odd that something internal to a transmission would snap audibly and at once leave you with zero transmission.

I should have specified, but you probably understood to begin with, that the movement I was referring to would be the driveshaft turning after the car is running and put into gear. If there were a snapped u-joint behind the driveshaft then the the driveshaft would spin when the transmission was in gear with the engine running. If there was a broken u-joint between the driveshaft and transmission then you could get right under the transmission and witness the transmission output shaft turning but the driveshaft not. I suppose another check would be to try to spin the driveshaft by hand with the engine off and the transmission alternately in park and in neutral and the rear wheels off the ground. If you can spin the wheels by turning the driveshaft with the transmission in neutral, then you know there is nothing preventing motion from the driveshaft back, and if you can STILL do so with the transmission in park, then you know your problem is within the transmission.
Sorry, I hope that was understood in the first post, maybe not.

Well, I wish I could have "helped" save you from having to get a new box, but I guess at least you know you need it!
Good luck, keep that Cressida going! Maybe time for a manual swap while you're at it!
