What family is the Cressida in?

I have owned at least one toyota since I got my first car (a corolla) but since I have picked up an 87 cressida I am a bit perplexed - this seems to be the one model that there is very little info about on the web.
I see that there are forums for all the major models, but where does the Cressida fit in? I have a few questions about the car, but alas, don't know where to ask - can someone help?
Thanks.

Cressida engines are usually m-series...5m-ge, 7m-ge, etc...I'm pretty sure they were in Supras, too.

Unlike what the popular opinion says here...Avalon's DID NOT REPLACE cressida's. Maybe for the state side..one was discontinued and other introduced..but around the world..they were still made. We owned a 1996 cressida (it was a 2.4 i4 with lack luster hp). Yeah, cressida's also came in 4 bangers....(not to states..but around the world). Cressida's were also badged different depending on which country you go to...I've seen same car badged as Chaser and MarkII. I was driven in a 1999 Mark II (RHD) when i was in INdia last...BEAUTIFUL....in the middle east you see a few modified cressida station wagons...that will make you v6 run for its money. I've raced a 5s celica on my dad's i4 cressida (on numerous occations) and WON! But then again, i was a m/t and he was a a/t.

Cressidas are basically 4 door Supras.

check out this info... very interesting:

http://www.thermactor.com/files/pages/Info/cvsi.htm

sorry link doesnt work, but its a comparison between the cressida and is300. in terms of handling and specs, every thing is almost the same except for bhp and torque (the is300 took the cake on that one.). this was comparing a 7mge cressida w/ a 2jzge vvti is300. turning radius was the same among other things. my brother's stock cressida handles awesome compared to my stock cam.

heres a cool forum:

ToyotaCressida.com and the forums should offer you what you need to know, but hey, I'm biased, I'm the mod there

Technically, the Mark II, Chaser, Cresta, and Cressida are different cars on the same chassis, but the Mark II sedan (not hardtop) is practically the same as the Cress. The Cressida name died after about 1992 when it was discontinued in North America and Australia. They're pretty big down under too.

Some engines that came in the Cressidas and models abroad:

1985-1988 Cressida: 5M-GE, 156hp
1989-1992 Cressida: 7M-GE, 190hp

GX71 Mark II/Chaser: 1G-GTE

X81 Chaser/Mark II/Cresta: 1JZ-GTE, 1G-FE, 1G-GTE, 1G-GZE, 4S-Fi, 2L-T (diesel), 7M-GE

corruptor, your Cressida is the MX73, for future reference should you ever need it. Same engine as the MKII Supra (Supra's mid sump, Cressida's front sump, however). Modifying these can be harder than you think. There's a guy in Arizona having a hell of a time getting his fire-breathing 1JZ-GTE swap into his MX83 (1989) Cressida. He's slapped the Chaser front end and numerous other things. Aftermarket support for this car, whlist you think is shared with the Supra, is actually quite limited. KG/MM offers lowering springs for the 85-88, but be prepared to wait MONTHS for shipping, that is, if you can even find them. DGTrials.com apparently will release some coilovers for the 85-88 and 89-92 soon.

there, a little Cressida info. Might as well ask in the Supra forum if it's engine related, but anything else, you may not get the right answer.

My Cressida-sig rules all, too

I sold my 1996 cressida catalog (from Dubai, UAE - middle east) to someone online 4 years ago....that would have been a nice find to hold (sucks to be me).

thank you for the help everyone, it's a shame that there isn't more aftermarket support for cressida mods - I have owned many different cars and this model really fits my personality well. But on the bright side just about anything can be done with a cutting torch and welder, right?

while this is very doable, keep in mind that there are extra roadblocks when modding Cressidas, specifically engine swaps. The nightmare is in the wiring

A 7M-GTE exhaust manifold with CT26 should bolt up just as it does on the MKII Supra, however.

I say just 7mgte that biatch and let somebody else worry about the wiring. tins of aftermarket for that engine and all you really need to worry about at that point are springs and brakes. I have a question though Shouldn't the Supra Brakes fit fine and what about Supra suspension?

Supra brakes will *not* work. Z32 300ZX brakes, however, will, apparently, assuming you're using a spacer of sorts and using proper offset (read: not stock) rims.

Suspension bits will generally *not* work. Apparently, MKII Supra front springs and MKIII rears will work. Don't go to market on this one.

Keep in mind, that with coilovers, you're going to have to go with Japanese units from the X80/X81 Mark II/Chaser/Cresta, if not, DGTrials.com units that may come out soon. JDM stuff comes from the likes of Tein (Type HA) and Kei Office (now discontinued, I think). If I reckon correctly, Tein makes S-Tech springs:
