I don't know a whole lot about "older" Toyotas, and so I was hoping you all could help.
I have an opportunity to purchase a 1985 Cressida with a "6MGE J-Spec" engine. The guy told me it would be a good car to build up as a drifter, but I'm not 100% sure he is trust-worthy. Is this a decent set-up? Are there performace parts available for the '85 Cressida chasis? How about the 6MGE?
Pretty much anything for a 7MGE (NA Supra engine) will fit. There is an aftermarket for the car, but you'll have some trouble finding certain parts because they were never really popular in North America. They do make good drifters from what I have seen, thats probably in part due to the longer wheelbase which gives a longer moment of inertia before completely swapping ends. It is a heavy car though, breaking traction might be a problem.
6mge is basically a 7m block under a 5m head. 6M mods are few and far between, with really only the Doug Thorley headers for the supra available (though very rare and expensive), and they may not fit in the cressida. Engine mods beyond that may include turboing the car with a CT26 from a MKIII Supra (almost a bolt on application, save fuel and engine management). It might drift, but everything for it is going to be a custom build, or a few rare parts residing in Japan if you have access to that market. I take it the car is a 5 speed? Lightened flywheels and HD clutches exist for the W58 gearbox, and are probably the easiest things to find. Suspension is going to be the toughest.
i have a friend who drifts an old school cresida. craziest thing i have ever seen. but yes, it is very possible. he has 7MGTE with a 5speed combo in his and as for suspension, he has some generic coil over sleeves that actually work pretty damn good. other than that, it's gutted to save weight and it is mostly stock...so good luck and have fun.

harder to drift, less scrub angle between the back and front for longer wheel base cars, ur theory would work if u were to do that brake drift (which even FWD cars pull off)

I think you're talking about breaking traction, not necessarily sliding along with some amount of control. I used to play around with a buddy's Caprice and my old Camaro when I was younger, it felt easier than holding on in the Corolla which has a much shorter wheelbase. Probably lack of skill more than anything though.
