Canada Friend To Buy Cressida ($400)

A friend of mine is going to be buying a 1986 Cressida as a daily driver untill we are able to import his car from Japan. Anyways, I am just curious as to any major problems that they had. He has to replace the timing belt, but other than that its in full running order. it has just over 200,000kms. It looks like it is fully loaded, moon roof, pwr windows, pwr lks, ac, auto and has the I6 2.8L.

So any information that you guys have would be appreciated.

Jeff

I've heard of only one 5M-GE in my life that blew a head gasket (it was on a forum, for that matter), and that was at 245,000 miles (almost 400,000km). As far as I know, it's the 7M-GE/GTE and the SOHC 5M-E that you have to worry about.

Since you're taking care of the timing belt... I suggest you take care of the cam seals, those like to leak oil over time. Valve stem seals like to leak (you'll burn oil, either at startup, or when pulling away from a stoplight.

Otherwise, standard procedure for an 1986-spec ANY CAR, regardless of make and model, with any amount of mileage: be ready.

Just as an update, he purchased the car shortly there after, we replaced the timing belt, did the standard fluid flush and relacement, changed the plugs, cleaned it up and its running great absolutely no problems.

His car will be here from Japan shortly so it only has to run for about 2 more weeks

Nice to hear. Is he going to keep it as a daily? I would think making some left turns with RHD is tricky unless you have a front-seat passenger you really trust

Nah, driving on the right side isnt as hard as it seams, you just have to approach left turns and passing on the hwy a little difference. He will definately keep it, probably use it as a winter driver
