i have a few questions concerning an old 89 tercel in my possession. i'm not really interested in 'performance' or anything really drastic, but i would like to get a little more from my car than the power i'm getting atm. one thing that really bothers me is that it's carbureted and it has problems with accelleration.. not sure what needs to be adjusted, but it's definitely hesitant at times. the carb has the adjustment screws plugged and i'm afraid to drill into it unless i have to.. also, if i was to rebuild my 3E engine, anybody know what options i have concerning a little performance boost?
i re-engineered that sideways mounted SU-style carb...it worked pretty well too! i got mine to climb! i was a ski patrol here in VA and i needed my Tercel to go uphill constantly. the Tercel climbed better than a jeep i encountered while skiing up above allentown, PA and going home in a snowstorm.
i don't know why, but after the last time i rebuilt it, i gave that damned carb to the junkyard after i did the Weber. anyway, there's this weird little nipple/tube that was a TSB for those things which helped immensely. also there are a few of those little screw covers that need to be removed. and if you live near a GOOD motorcycle carbuer-traitor shop, get them to drill the one slide (i will look for all of that info) because it will remove the taper out of it. but, after all of that, along with the 6 yards of vac line (i replaced mine and it took 6yards!!!) you'd be sooooo much better off with a Weber.
