Canada 1991 Tercel - Winter Tires

Hi all,

I am on the market for new winter tires and have been toying with the idea of buying bigger rims and tires. Would anyone be able to tell me what the benefits or disavantages are if I were to purchase larger rims and tires than the P155/SR13's recommended? Also, what would a good purchase be for Montreal winters?

My first winter with my Tercel,

I have 204/40R16 Falken tires on my 91 Tercel right now. Go for 15's with a little more profile. Mine have too little rubber on them and it makes for a rough ride.

And as for brands and what to look for. I don't really know.

Advantages of having bigger rims and tires.
Better handling, better looks, if you don't get too big of rims it will give a smoother ride, I think. Also better brakes and take offs, because you have a larger contact patch with the road.

Disadvantages
You probably will need to roll your rear passenger side fender so it doesn't rub. Easy task to do, dont' worry.

But it's very good to have two sets of rims. One with a good set of summer tires (These would be your bigger fancier rims) and then one set with a really good set of winter tires (your stock rims).

although wider seems better, it is, in fact, better to stay narrow for a snow tire. a wider track allows a car to 'track' following ruts...bad ju-ju! a narrower tire offers better control.

Get some 175/70/13 snow tires. snow tires make a world of a difference in the winter. I have a set of 175/70/13 and they made a dramatic difference in handling in the snow and you can still do donuts and e-brakes of course. they aren't much either. just get some standard snows in that size, they don't have to be fancy, and you don't even need studs.

155-80-13's are fairly good in the snow. ground clearance will be more of a problem than the type of tire. weak fwd cars almost never get stuck unless they are bottomed out in snow. regular all-season tires usually work great in snow for me as long as they have good tread depth.

Go with 155-80-13. My GF has that on her 92 Tercel. She has Good Year UltraGrip. They work wonder in the snowy Québec winters.
