Clicking/Tapping Noise

Recently hadn't been driving my tercel, rode on it for about 2 weeks now with it needing oil. (I know you guys are gonna yell at me) The light kept blinking on and off throught those two weeks, of course today was the day I was gonna get that oil change for it but yesterday as I was driving down the road it made a whiring/clicking sound pretty high pitched and just totally shut off, as if I turned the baby off. I assume this is the engine stopping itself before it completly over heats. It did this two more times in my attempt to get it to the closest gas station to get it oil. I got it 2 quarts and she was smoking somewhat out of the hole where u put the oil in and I let her sit about 10 minutes. The gauge sat at the half way point between C AND H on the thermostat, after this she cooled back down and ran just fine. But now I have a loud, continuous clicking/tapping noise, someone said it could be the engine knocking. After work on the way home it seem to have gotten louder, it's pretty consistent, so the light blinked intermitantly too so I stopped and threw in another 2 quarsts of oil. What can I do? Any advice or anything would help! Thanks!!

Craig

P.S. I know I shouldn't have let that car go so long with little to no oil.

Probably too late, sounds like the damage has already been done.

and you can probably still ride it for a while, but the damage is done, its just a matter of prolonging how long you will have before it dies
