Can anyone tell me what kind of engine this is? The guy that shipped it calls it a 4E, and says it is a Paseo engine. My mechanic says it is a Corolla engine and will not fit in my 1991 Tercel, contrary to what the engine seller told me. Here is a link to a photo album.
I'm in desparate need of a new engine and was told this would do the trick, but now I am not so sure. I have higher-res photos I can email if someone needs them
That looks like a 5efe to me, which is what it is if it's out of a Paseo. Though if he is calling it a 4e, that would be out of one of a couple JDM cars that used the 4efe. But if you are going with 4e, get the 4efte. The "t" is for turbo.
Otherwise, if it's a 5efe. It will work. Talk to TdotTercel about putting a 5efe into a Tercel. He just did it.

I was told it was a 4e. Does anyone know where I could find installation instructions that I could convey to a mechanic? My town is pretty small and has no import specialist shops, like the one I bought the engine from - closest is Montreal - 10 hours away!
I assume it is a 4E from the sticker as well, but I am getting mixed messages. What year of Paseos was this engine used in?
It is a 5efe without a doubt. I know because I had a 5efe and swapped the 5efhe in. I should know what each looks like. 4e my ass. That motor is in bad shape too. Tell your mechanic to screw off because if you have a Paseo or a Tercel it will fit with no problems... no major ones anyway.
I just realized that I sounded kind of pissed in the above post. Anyway. Some Cynos did come with a 4e. Not many, but some. It very well could be a 4e. The 4e is 1.3 liter non turbo and is a turd of an engine. Unfortunately it looks EXACTLY like a 5efe until you check the deck height and numbers. It is like a D15 Civic and a B16 Civic as far as comparisons go. Less than 90hp... no improvement over a stock Terc. After taking a closer look at that one pic of the sticker above the crank, I may have to change my mind and say that it appears to be a 4e and NOT A 4EFTE which makes it garbage. Sorry. Good luck.
From my understanding all the "E" series engines are built on the same block so everything from your old motor should fit it. The plenum chamber on the intake manifold though does look larger than that of my 5E-FE, so that might be what your mechanic is refering to when he says it won't fit.
If the 4E is a 1.3Litre then I would suspect that you will probably be loosing some performance if you install that engine. At least bottom end torque. I might be wrong, I'm just guessing, since I don't know the spec's on that engine.

When the stock Tercel engine has a hole in the block the size of my fist, I'd say it is a big improvement. I'm not a performance enhancement guy, I just want a car that works and has good mileage
