I have an 83 Tercel (same as previous posts), 1.5 3AC motor (japan), and have been wondering if anyone on here had a successfull transmission (auto to manual) changeover. Any tips / tricks? Suggestions? Current auto tranny is just about shot, and would like to change it to manual if possible.
Thanks
Rob

May also be looking into a stronger motor while I do this...any suggestions on what motors I should be out looking for, for a reasonably easy changeover so I can just find a motor and tranny all at once ?
Best bet in my opinion would be to find a wrecked car of the same model year as yours that has a manual transmission in a nearby salvage yard. Everything that you will need should be there (hopefully) and it should cost you less if you get all the stuff in a package deal.
You will need the tranny - (ofcourse). Maybe mounts too.
Fly wheel.
Clutch pressure plate (get a new disk).
Clutch pedal and bracket assy, master cylinder, slave cylinder and fluid lines.
Shifter and cables.
You might need to change the brake pedal and bracket too depending on if they are different or not.
On newer Tercels the thermostat housing is different between the auto and manual models. On your model I am not sure.

Im not aware, because I cant find the chiltons manual for my exact year, Id have to order it. Anyone know offhand if this car was made with a cable or hydraulic clutch? If not, once I find the assembly in a yard I'll know. These cars are almost impossible to find in a salvage yard in my area in phoenix, darn things run forever!
Any recommendations on what motor I might upgrade to would still be appreciated, so I can get the motor and trans in one swoop. (and what car I might find this interchangeable type of motor)

Try "Toyz Unlimited" They have a web site, and I think I have seen one or two of that generation tercel there, but I don't know if they were auto or manual. They are Toyota/Lexus specialists, and have a Toyota salvage yard attached to the shop. All kinds of neat old Toyotas there. http://www.toyz-unlimited.com/
For the manual, try Books4Cars. Toyz Unlimited might have the "Toyota" manual also.

Use that link to see salvage yards across the US selling your transmission. Prices ranging from $100 to $405. Call them and ask about the other parts you need as a package.
Wow! That is a cool link. I put that in my favorites.
