Hi Guys
If you've been reading along you'll know I had some rattling, a bang a cloud of smoke and my engine shut down on me.
For a little while the engine would crank, but not run, but then even that stopped as it felt like something was jammed in the pinion teeth.
I took the timing belt cover off today, and the belt is still there, so that shoots down one theory. In fact, it was my only theory, so I'm now looking for ideas.
Nothing has come blasting through the block, and everything seems to be where it should be, which seems to negate the idea that something came loose and flew off the engine.
I thought it might have been the starter, because I put a new one on just a couple of weeks ago, but it's still there. Of course it was a reman unit, so it could be shot; I'll have to get it tested.
The only other thing I noticed is that it feels funny when I step on the gas pedal when I was crying to crank it. Even my wife noticed it when she was trying to help me this morning. It's like resistance that used to be there is no longer there. But the engine isn't cranking...
Hi
I may have a lack of imagination, but the only way I can think to bump the engine other than pushing it down the hill and chasing after it is to jack up the front end, put it in 5th gear and try turning one of the road wheels. Would that work? Which wheel should I try to turn?
Thanks
Phil
Hi
I can't do that. The engine will not turn on the starter. It did for a little while, then gave up. As the timing belt is in place I suppose that can only really mean the engine is siezed for some reason, although there was oil in it.
I took the starter out to have it checked as it's a reman unit that I only put in 2 weeks ago, but I can't see that leading to much
Phil
You could indeed try putting it in 5th gear, jacking up one of the front wheels (it doesn't matter which one), and turning the wheel by hand. Or just put it in 5th gear, and push the car back and forth a couple of feet. Check to see if the disty rotor turns (remove the disty cap), as well as seeing if the cam gears and timing belt turn.
This will also be a way to check if the engine has seized. If you can't push it, the problem is a seized engine, not a bad starter.
Sorry I missed you, stop in anytime. #yahooka is a marijuana friendly chat that runs on one of my home computers. I'm in there several times a day but mostly at night. Boyer idles there a lot, he's also a toyota person.
Do you use a diferent nickname in there? Nobody had heard of TercelGTS.
That was the first time I had used IRC, so I did the /list command and pulled up about 120,000 active channels, most of which had only one person in them, and most of which had only one person in them, and almost none of them gave any indication of what the chat was about. It was pretty frustrating
Phil
That shouldn't have been my server, only should be 2-6 rooms open. Just click the link in my sig and it should open the IRC and connect to my server. I go by Dirt, DirtWeed or DW.
I'll be on after 7pm eastern and prolly be on all night.
Because the engine would not crank I took out the starter and had it tested and it's fine. Starting to look like the engine is flat-out siezed, I think...opinions?
I read the sticky about engine swapping. Would this Paseo engine fit a 90 Tercel DX?
