New Toyota Head Gasket, no more leaks!!!

Guys,
just want to let all of you know that I was having head gasket leaks but now they are fixed. As part of my first engine rebuild, I was loosing coolant at a pretty rapid rate, I mean you could see the leak down the side of the engine. I even drove the car for around 1500 miles with this leak.

Last week, I replaced the head gasket and head bolts with genuine toyota parts. But I guess the clincher is that I used 180 grit brown sand paper on a flat sanding block. According to my local import parts lady, and yes I said lady, she has been selling import parts for about 30 years and really knows her stuff.

Anyway I was told to use the brown sand paper instead of the grey/black wet and dry stuff. This was explained to me that the brown will not clog and is better to use. This is the one step that I did not do last time. I sanded the head and block till they were shiny metal.

Also the toyota head bolts seemed to bite better then the topline bolts that were used before.

The coolant seems to keep at the same level.

Thanks for all your help and support,

My next project is a 1975 BMW 2002, that has been sitting in my yard/garage for 11 years now with a blown engine, Wish me luck.

hey,

Cool, it always feel good when you do a big job right. Did you check the head and see if it was warped? Ive seen this done by using a straight edge and then trying to slide a feeler guage underneath different parts of the head. Ive heard that a lot of the times the head needs to be shaved a little bit, dunno if thats true though. I wonder if there are other ways of doing this, I would think the best way would be if you had a small peice of glass, because it is always pure and straight. oh ya and good luck
