i am putting a new head on my car as soon as i get it back from the machine shop, and i have heard about releasing more power through putting another camshaft in it. i have my choice of many camshafts from the junkyard, and i was wondering, without going aftermarket, which stock cam from what car would be best to put in my own?
wow...i completely spaced when i made that post...sorry
okay, it is a 1989 tercel, 3E. i got a head off of a junker and it's in the shop right now being tested for compression, and if it's good, he's gonna clean it up. what i want to know is, without going w/ an aftermarket cam, can i get one out of another vehicle that will improve performance slightly? i've got word of a mild cam...but can i get one out of another vehicle?
well here's news. the valves, the machine shop guy said, arent sealing well, so he suggests either a valve job or a new head...duh, i already thought about that. so...which is better? or could i simply put that head on my car and it will be fine w/ the poorly sealing valves? how much should a valve cost?
If the valves are ok, and you just need a valve job, It shouldnt be expensive at all. I think its like 40 bucks for new seals. I wouldnt put it on the engine without the new seals. Thats what I would do, I can only imagine what a new head would cost. Lol, like you said, any used toyota 3e head is gonna need new seals anyways.
well the guy quoted a valve job/resurfacing at "well over $200". he said 125 for the valve job alone. i'm gonna definitely search around for another place to get it done, but first i would like to determine that it isnt anything other than valves, but i thought i'd already done that. the guy at the machine shop suggested rebuilding the engine, but....fuck that. any other thoughts? ways of saving some money?
which is funny, because after extensive looking i found a shop that would do the valve job for $68, and the resurface for $41. This is good, however, now i'm wondering if i should even do the job instead of just letting the engine die, since i'm going to get a new vehicle in the summer...
