Gen1 1992 Paseo, General Condition

I'm not taking a poll, but I'd like to get some idea of the general condition of Toyota Paseos, especially early models, from Paseo owners.

Some suggestions for discussion:

Condition
  • Mechanical
  • Exterior
  • Interior
  • Reliability
  • Functionality of all components
Subjective
  • Driving Impression
  • Aesthetic or Design-oriented
  • Would you Restore?
Modifications
  • Pros
  • Cons
  • Ideal fabrications or other modifications
Service
  • Availability of replacement parts
  • Cost of replacement parts
  • Ease of maintenence
  • Garages and Mechanics

Thanks

Jeff_x

When it coomes down to service on a Paseo.... Since it is a discountinued car it is ususally hard to find replacement parts and some you might have to get imported or checking out ebay once in a while. Most of the time anybody on this forum can help you out with parts or suggestions or where to look... all you have to do is ask.

Thanks, Zer0.

I read the forums, but I don't get a sense of how other Paseo drivers perceive their overall experience with this model car. I have only owned a Paseo for a short time. I have very positive opinions about it. The parts availability question, especially as I would like my Paseo to remain as stock as possible, is a BIG factor, and I'd like to proceed IF I get a sense that there are possibilites for maintaining it as stock.

I have had some basic service done (new timing belt, oil seals, water pump, oil and other fluids flush and change, new K&N air filter, stock).

Also, I have never owned a Toyota product before, although I owned several Subarus in the past (very positive experiences also).

I bought the Paseo because:

  1. I like the way it looks
  2. Toyota has a great reputation
  3. Fuel economy (my other car is a Pontiac 6000 wagon, which is nice for hauling, but mpg? Fugetaboutit!
After buying the vehicle, I have found that although it has a small displacement engine, it is a blast to drive.

Performance mods seem prohibitive, expensive, and don't result in much overall performance gain.

Maintenence seems simple enough (although, and I read this in the forum) the oil filter is a bear to replace.

I would restore this car's body (it has the typical rust spots for the '92), although it is otherwise in very good condition.

I really have gotten some great hints and tips from this forum and I wish you all well and "Happy Motoring"!

Overall I love the Paseo it is an awesome not only on fuel economy, which is a big issue in US, but also because I love how it looks on he interior and exterior... It looks sporty... at least to me. I have had my seo for at least about half a year now and I havent had any problems with it except for the normal maintenance stuff. It is a good buy and Im extremely happy with it. Im curious though.... why leave it stock?

Why leave it stock? Good question. I've always appreciated cars that were left in their original configurations (unless there were some defect that could be fixed by modification), if the design integrity was apparent in the first place. The Paseo looks great as-is. I bought this car as a commuter, and since it isn't a race car, stock is adequate, and, again, I bought this car for its looks and economy initially and wouldn't change a thing on the exterior (except for the body rust).

I think the overall design of the Paseo, as a sporty compact, is, in my estimation, what makes it great and sets it apart from other "econoboxes".

My impression of stock, too, is that OE options that were available from the factory for the type are acceptable. For example, my Paseo came with a non-stock POS head unit that didn't work correctly. I replaced it (and I know for the audiophiles out there this probably seems lame) with the correct Toyota CD-player/AM-FM with the slave cassette. Now, this wasn't, I believe, stock for this year. However, it is stock for Gen 1 Paseos, it looks right in the dash, and the sound is (well, will be, since I am replacing the old Fujitens with aftermarket speakers--I'm not a complete obsessive) acceptable.

I believe the designers at Toyota had a good day when they conceived the Paseo.

My fiancee bought her '92 'Seo before we got together.... I actually helped her find and buy it. In that time, short of the maintenance stuff, it was a great car until a rod started knocking . We both enjoy its looks int/ext, and we are both able to get it to move/ handle great. we're currently looking into perfromance mods to put more of a hurting on the ricers around here.

Overall I don't think either of us would get rid of it for anything

I have a 92 with 198,xxx miles. Original motor. I do not see finding replacement mechanical parts a problem. Finding blue interior has been the most difficult process.

Mine came stock with the AM/FM with slave cassette with the two front door speakers.

As for the oil filter, invest in a oil filter socket, as seen below. I bought on after it took a "quick lube" place over an hour to change my oil due to them misplacing the correct tool to remove the oil filter. I have had to offer the use of the socket to a few quick lube places changing my oil. Idiots.

I bought two of these today, thank you. One for me, one for my mechanic--the socket was inexpensive (pep boys).

I'm the original owner of a 1992 seo. I was thinking of getting a new car this year, but decided to restore mine to it's original glory. Here is step one...New Paint!

It's flash, so will take a moment to load...

http://www.mutantcheese.com/paseo/

In short, I love my paseo. I have over 158,000 trouble free miles on it so far.

I'm thinking of doing the starlet tubo conversion, but will wait until the current engine fails (may be never at this rate)
