Rear Wheel Bearing Replace

Hi every one, I'm new to this world!

I've 94 Tercel, and I'm getting wooshing noise when drive car. Noise increase when speed is high and stops when car stops.
I think it is rear wheel bearings. Can any one tell me how to replace the bearings? and do I need any special tools for the job?

Thank you in advance.

-Ashish

Welcome to the board, Ashish!

Recently had to replace front wheel bearings on a 92 Tercel with 275,000kms. I am a bit surprised thet rear bearings would need replaced first. How many kms on your car?

Wheel bearings normally make a "humming" noise, that gets louder with speed, does not change when you press the brake pedal, and does not change when you put the clutch down (or shift to neutral) and let the rpm drop while the speed stays constant. The noise also usually gets louder/quieter on turns (louder when you turn one way, and quieter when you turn the other way).

I don't know about the rear bearings. The front bearings are a DIY job, except you need to take the hub to a shop to get the old bearings pressed out and new bearings pressed in (or I did, anyway).

Hey,

To replace the rear wheel bearings, all you need is a needle nose pliers for the cotter pin, and a kinda large socket. With an impact and a quick jack I could prolly do it in less than 3 minutes. Some might say that you need a torque wrench to tighten that wheel nut, but I have always tighten them up pretty snug then backed off a little.

Thanks for reply.
Mine is 196,000 KM. Yesterday I put jack on each side one by one and checked each wheel. There was no noise comming from both front wheel. But when I tried on rear wheel, both were making noise and sound was humming. Passenger side rear wheel make more noise than driver side.
So it was my conclusion that some thing is wrong with rear bearings. But telling u guys truth I'm pretty new to this stuff!
You r right Nick, noise is Humming, it increases with speed, doesn't go with putting car in neutral.

Jiji do you know what is approx cost of rear wheel bearing, I called dealer, they
quote 87$ (Canadian) for 2 bearings (inner and outer). Do I need special grease to apply or any brand will do?

Hey,

Its around 10 to 15 bucks a bearing for the rear (USD). Im sure the damage is prolly done, but you could try repacking your bearings with grease. Ya any wheel bearing grease will work.

Yep, definitely sounds like rear wheel bearings. Parts are typically much more expensive from the dealer. Front bearings were about $20 Canadian from a local parts store, so add a bit for the exchange rate to jijiandfarmgang's $12US, and that would sound reasonable.

Hey guys,

The info above looks pretty good. I am Ashish's cousin and I was looking at his car yesterday. When we jacked up the rear end, and spun the wheels, there was an evident, roaring sound that did come from the rear passenger side. Also I noticed that the wheel was spinning out of round, but what I discovered was that both rear wheels had a slight hum, and both were spinning a little out of round. I feel the major noise is coming from the rear passanger side.

I was contemplating doing a DIY job and found the pictorial about the rear disc transplant on the forums. But I had a few questions.

1) Once the cotter pin is removed the the 22mm nut is pulled out, will the outer bearing come out?

2) How do I access the inner bearing? What do i do if the 12 year old Drum brake cover, dosent come out? Also do the shoes need to be readjusted or something more? (I really feel discs are soooo much simpler)

3) This maybe a stupid question but if I get new bearings both inner and outer, they should be greased right? They dont need to be regreased correct?

4) How do you go about removing the inner bearing, since I think there is a cover? How do you reinstall the cover? Any special tools needed for the whole job?

So if you could tell me if I am thinking this correctly: Pull the cap off, undo the hub bolt- remover outer bearing, pull the brake drum out, pry inner bearing and then grease the spindle and reassemble? Also are there torque specs listed anywhere for the bolts that need to be tightenend.

Sorry for all the questions guys, I am just a bit confused.

thanks again

Hey,

Drum brakes aren't that complicated once you understand how they work. I reccomend a chiltons manual for problems 1-6
