I have a 1995 Tercel with a 1.5 DOHC 5e engine. The head gasket went and I replaced it but I can't tighten the head bolts past 45 to 50 ft lbs. I tried finding non-stretch bolt but there are none. The bolts in the engine are 9 mm. No one makes a 9 mm bolt. Help please. Thanks guys
What do you mean you can't tighten them? Are you using the original bolts or new bolts? Are you using the Toyota specialty tool designed to install and remove the head bolts? Need more information.
12 point 8mm. Mac Tools, Snap-On, pretty much everybody has them. You can even order it from Toyota. As for the headbolts, it isn't recommended to re-use them since they do stretch when torqued.
on my 93 paseo with the 5e, the head bolts are 10mm triple box serrated wrench. got the tool at napa. use a small hammer to tap the tool into the head bolts. its a perfect fit.

That actually is not normal. Both my 92 and my 96 have 12 point 8mm according to Toyota specs.
That is odd. From my sig you can see that I own a 92 and a 96 Paseo and they both have the 8mm. I have also done engine and head swaps to many 4efte, 5efe, 5efhe, and 5efe DIS and they all had 8mm. I say pull the valve cover and count to see if it is a hex or a bi-hex and then test fit. Heck, I'd lend you mine if you were close. I'm not argueing, just telling you what the manuals used by Toyota say and my experience.
gotta love car makers i thought gm was the only one that uses 11 different size bolts for the same purpose hah i just bought the whole serrated set at savage a whopping $8 but this yota is done waiting on a crank pulley this one actually pulled off by hand

toyota head bolt. They offer 3 sizes The 8 bi-hexagonal fits into an 8mm 12 point socket. The 10 bi-hexagonal fits into a 10mm 12 point socket.
The 9 triple square has more pointed tips on the end they are cut different than the bi-hexagonal. They ups within one working days time. Close to Nashville Tenn. They give you 90 to send it back if you don't like it.
If you search amazon the 8 bi-hexagonal is available. Vim tools is one of the cheap ones. CTA Tools also sell them. They offer all three sizes around $15.00 for all three. Otherwise watch ebay. Mac and Snap-on also sell them.
If you are going to do a few buy a good quality tool. My sons Supra used a 10mm allen bolt.
