Hello y'all~

sorry for asking this noob question, but, what does the purge control valve do?
recently, the check engine light came on on my 97 tercel and i had a friend read the OBDII code for me and it came out to be one of the ones related to the purge control valve (dont' remember the exact code)...

is it an important / essential part of the engine? or is it just something that has to do with emissions (which is not regulated here up north

)?

Its just an emission control valve. Toyota calls the purge valve a VSV. They usually fail or stick in the closed possition. Do a search on VSV for more info. Its a fairly common problem.
