So we have had threads about engine swaps but in different threads. I wanted to make this in a nut shell for all. Engine swapping is a great way to gain power but to not be taken lightly. Do your homework and should be fine.
First you have to know what engine codes mean so you can understand what you’re putting in your engine bay.
Before the dash:
The number indicates the engine’s generation. The letters indicate the engine familyFor example in 2JZ-GTE engine is the 2nd model of the family and in the JZ family.
After the dash:
G = twin cam (wide angle, 45 degrees or more between the intake and exhaust valves)
F = "economical" twin cam (narrow angle, around 22 degrees)
T = turbocharged
Z = supercharged
E = fuel injectioni = single point fuel injection
R = air injection
S = swirl intake ports (only a few made in mid '80s)
S = direct injection & swirl pot pistons (starting from '97/98)
U = emission package (Japan)
C = emission package (California)
LPG = LPG fuel
Then once you know that you can explore what options you have. I made a list of engines that I have found that have been done.
The hybrid uses the 5E-FHE crank block, head, rods, timing belt, belt gears, intake manifold, seals, bearings, flywheel and clutch with 4E-FTE pistons, oil sump, and oil pan.
Although both engines being almost the same there are some differences. All in all, you are taking the best from both engines and making a new one. Never has been dyno tested but I assume it’s a hefty motor.
5E-FHE
The 5E-FHE is a 5E-FE just the Japanese version. The internals are better and it has higher compression. Direct bolt-on

4A-GZE:
4A-GE/7A-FE Hybrid
This hybrid uses the 4A-GE top with the 7A-FE bottom. It increases the displacement to 1.8. More displacement more power. I don't know much about this swap but more details are coming soon.
3S-GE & 3S-GTE
The best horsepower engines swaps for Paseos also is the hardest and heaviest to install (wiring, fabricating engine mounts, notching the frame and space) Lots of time and money will be involved.
As long as I am talking about engine’s I will briefly talk about turboing them. Best way to go about turboing is use an engine that was made to have forced induction; 4E-FTE, 4A-GZE, 3S-GTE. The 5E-FHE has pretty tough internals and maybe good to turbo but like I said you have to do your homework.
I have been doing tons of research on many sites and forums. I have asked Toyota mechanics their opinion's and got thier know how. Enjoy.

I'm planning to do a 3sgte swap to my 95 tercel. Besides the custom mounts what other concerns are there. I know the wiring will be a mess, but does the tranny be a direct bolt up. My tercel has a 2nd generation 5efe ... 5spd. I'm planning on making a 11 second street legal tercel.

you'll need frame cut and reinforced custom mounts, costum axels, the tranny that goes to the 3sgte, a mess of wiring and many many other stuff is not a cheap swap you better have more than 10K in the bank just for the swap
does the tranny from the 3E motor bolt up to the 4E-FTE. I know its probably not a very strong tranny but is it the same bellhousing flange and clutch??
yeah more or less. these numbers are factor spec from japan. that to fit them are from people that have done it. so if you have any suggestions or questions so ask away i love to help.
