93 Paseo transmission

I have a 93 Paseo that is making a pretty horrible sound from the transmission when starting and sometimes while in gear. I initially took it to a shop and the bolts connecting the transmission to the engine were about to fall off! That was fixed, but the transmission is still making some nasty sounds, the mechanic thought it might be some ?throttle plate? in the transmission(it was over 2 months ago and I don't remember what part he thought it was) He thought that while the transmission was lose that it wiggled something lose inside the transmission.

Transmission work usually costs 700-1000. The paseo isn't worth this much so I don't want to pay to have it fixed, especially if something happens to break right after fixing it. How much knowledge/time/materials would it take for me to fix this myself?

Rebulding a tranny is a bitch, takes tools, time and money. The cheapest and more relible way to do it is get a tranny for a junk yard. Its a direct bold on. Not very hard to do. You can prob find a tranny for your car for about 200 or less. I mean the whole motor with the tranny goes for 500. Or some one might sell you their old one who did the 4EFTE swap and kept their old tranny. Ask around. To make your tranny swap fast and easy, try to find a garage with a hoist. If not, get a 4 high jack stands. borrow or rent a tranny jack, you can prob find one from RONA. I found an engine hoist there, very cheap. Then just unbolt the old one and bold the other one on. Change your cclutch wire you are at it (you don't hace to).. Drain the trany first For more ditails on the swap, get a tercel or paseo manual from the library. or go to autozone.com and go to doit your self guide.
