Need help with 93 tercel

alright. ran into a big problem. just left my house going to work and 5 miles down the road, boom, the car takes a shit. starts running like crap, feels like its bucking and missing. managed to get it home. checked out the engine. said hell with it, did a plugs, wire, cap, and rotor tuneup. also did the valve cover gasket. still running like shit. so i just took it it to the goodyear up the road, and 81dollars later, he says the number 3 cylinder is dead...no compression. wtf? any ideas on what that could be? guy says its probably a burnt valve, stuck valve, or blown valve...that sound right? he said if that is the problem it be a 8-10 hour job at the shop, so its gonna cost me alot. i want to fix it myself.

anyone have or had this problem before? all you have to do is swap out the bad valve, put new one in and button everything back up? i know it isnt that simple, but...does anyone have a DIY on how to do this?

car is a 93 tercel dx, auto. 1.5. has 80k original miles. is this a good time to rebuild the engine? anyway, just for know, i'm looking to see if anyone has a guide on how to do a valve job. be nice if someone has a DIY to a rebuild also. i've honestly never tore that deep into an engine before, let a alone an import motor, but i'm a quick learner.

PLEASE HELP!! i need the car back driving ASAP. as long as the car is fucked up, i cant get to work and i'm losing most of the piss poor check i get. please help.

might possible consider buying a great running motor that doesnt need anything and doesnt burn oil. anyone have one that is somewhat cheap? just a stock 1.5 or 1.6. nothing fancy. beleive it has the 3ee???or something like that. new to the yota scene. have to be somewhat near NJ, PA..i'm in 07882.

PLEASE HELP!!!!

If it is a bad valve just replace hte whole head with a cheapie from the wreckers... Probably be easier than changing the valve

Replacing the head would be one good option. Would it be worth trying something like Seafoam first, just on the chance it might free up a gummed up valve?
Edit: It seemed to help in this similar case: http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/t118207.html

thats what i was thinking of trying....dumping some seafoam in it and see what happens. some one also told me that i should try some MMO(marvel mystery oil) and pour like a ounce into each cylinder and let it sit overnight and run it high rpm next morning. might try that then seafoam the bitch.......

you can just replace the head? i didnt even know the valves were in the head. not to familar with internals. i'll check for a cheap head tomorrow, maybe someone on here has one or on ebay for cheap. we'll see. i'll post up tomorrow and let you know how the MMO and seafoam shit went.

Yep, the valves are in the head. The last car I owned in which the valves were not in the head was a 1955 Ford Anglia (side valve engine).

If it is a stuck valve (which seems plausible) then dumping marvel mystery oil (or anything) into the spark plug holes probably won't help, because that mystery oil would settle on the pistons (and might conceivably help the piston rings), but the valves are above them. I would try an engine oil flush, since that will mix with the oil, and help clean (if it works) everything under the valve cover (including, of course, the valves).

By the way, when you removed the valve cover, to replace the valve cover gasket, what did it look like underneath? Did there seem to be a lot of thick sludge, or was everything clean?

everything seemed to be in pretty good shape under the valve cover. i was going to try some adjusting but it said you need a feeler guage and a screwdriver. i thought you just had use a torque wrench to make sure they were all correct... the cam and everything looked like it was nice and clean, no sludge, or very little if there was any, looked like clean oil. yeah, fuck it, i'm gonna walk to the advance auto right down the street in the morning, drive it over to acme parking lot and seafoam the car. cant hurt any. hope to hell it fixes it.

welp, after dumping 2 whole cans of seafoam in the motor....still running like shit. put 1 whole can in thru the vacuum hose for the TB, and the other can straight in the valve cover. let it sit for an hour...smoked a bit and still running like shit. can definitly hear a ticking type noise under the valve cover, thinking its a broken valve. so i guess now i have to find a good head that has all the parts in good shape. anyone have one? i'm going to post a ad up under parts and see if i get an hits on it.
