throttle cable problems

I have been having some work done. The mechanic claims that my throttle cable was damaged. How did this happen? I am now waiting for them to fix this problem. Did they do something? Or am I fortunate that this was caught?

Hard to say on the details given. It's possible that it wore out and wouldn't be the first. I had a cable pop on a nissan once while working on it.
