Replaced Head Gasket atter Clanking Noise

Hey guys i need a little help here. I replaced the Head Gasket on my 93 tercel. I followed the direction in the book how to torque and bolt pattern. First past was 22 ft lb, 2nd 36 ft lb and last 90 deg. When i restarted the car it make a loud clanking noise. Do i need to tighten it up more or there are something i should've done first b4 bolting it in togethere?? Any suggestions is absolutely highly appreciated.. thanks

An improperly installed head gasket might blow out or leak (water or air), but it should not make a clanking noise. Are you sure you installed the right thickness gasket (too thin and the pistons will hit the valves), did not leave any items in the cylinder (nuts, washers, etc) and set the cam/crank timing correctly?

Is this a 3E engine? Improper cam/crank timing (not installing the timing build properly) can result in the pistons hitting the valves.

Also check to make sure the valve train is setup right. Turn the engine over by hand with the valve cover off. See if you can hear or feel something amiss.
