Better Intake Manifold

As everyone knows 2nd gen 5EFE have horrible intake manifolds. They basically leave the motor asthmatic on the top end. Now I want to swap out the intake manifold out of my second gen 5EFE, there are three ways to go. First gen 5EFE manifold, ACIS 5EFHE, or the most difficult first gen 1ZZ manifold. Well I want something relitively easy to put it so first gen 1ZZ intake manifold is out of the question. Now we are only left with the first gen 5EFE and ACIS 5EFHE manifolds. Does the first gen 5EFE manifold just drop in (plug and play) or is there mods. I know the ACIS 5EFHE you have to do some mods, what are they and where can I find the ACIS manifold?

Thanks
TTercel

I believe I saw on here some time ago that swapping the throttle body off a 4A-FE would improve top end breathing, and it bolts right up to the 5E-FE manifold. Can anybody confirm this?

I have a '92 Paseo manifold. I can't quite remember what the difference is between mine and the newer ones.

I have been looking at this myself. I believe I am gonna try to construct a sheetmetal intake manifold for it myself and see what kind of diff it makes on a dyno.

Go here and you can see why they wont line up. The bolt pattern is the same but the ports are in different locations and they are shaped differently. There is no easy swap for the 2nd gen 5E-FE. Any upgrade must be fabricated.

Donald: Swapping a 4A-FE throttle body on your 1st gen 5E-FE will do nothing for you at all. They both have a 50mm bore.

A custom adapter plate could be used to mount an ACIS manifold, so I've been told. The ports are differently shaped and dont quite line up. Theres also a tubular header type intake manifold out there. I want one. I just need one as well as a spare DIS head to get an adapter made up. One of those major PITA processes that probably wont happen until all the easier cheaper mods are all done.

Another good comparison:

BTW you can look into putting a bigger TB on a DIS 5E. The DIS 5E TB is smaller than the 1st gen 5E's. Certain years/models of corolla TB will work with minor mods. I cant remember which though. That will help a little with the high end at the expense of a little low end.

So basically they dont drp straight in (damn you Toyota). So what would I have to modify to get the first gen 5EFE intake manifold to my second gen 5EFE? Will there be a noticable difference in power...?

You'd have to get a custom metal plate that sits between the mani and cylinder head that smoothes the ports together, 2 different intake mani gaskets and probably longer studs. A paseo manifold I dont think would help that much but the tubular one or the ACIS one would help, if you can rig up a vacuum system to actually operate the ACIS.

So do any aftermarket companies make a performance intake manifold for a 2nd gen 5efe?

I think the only options you can do is either an ACIS (good luck finding one - eBay is your best bet, or keep an eye out in the classifieds on most paseo/tercel/starlet forums). OR, you can do the ITB (individual throttle body) setup by using half of a stock throttle body which is molded to the throttle bodies of a GSXR600 (it's the 600 right?).

HOWEVER - here's the downside to the ITB setup is that it's LOUD... a nice sound, but LOUD! especially under WOT.

Not really much of a downside to an ACIS, but as stated, you'll need an adapter plate, along with making sure it'll fit. Between gens, I don't think the ACIS would fit from 1st - 2nd, or vice versa.

What about just taking the stock manifold and throttle body to a machine shop and having them bore it? Does anyone know if that would be worth while?
