oil burning

I have a 94 tercel with 116k miles .I did the vss but still burn oil .I pulled the spark plugs and they were white no signs of oil. I don't have blue smoke in the am. I did a compression test 1-200,2-190,3-205,4-205. all looks good. I could use some advise as where / what to check next.
Thanks Paul

hamelpe: "vss" = "valve stem seals"? (Not vehicle speed sensor?). I don't know. It is always possible that the oil control rings are worn, even if the other piston rings are good (giving you that good compression). But I think this is rather unlikely, given your relatively low mileage, and very good (too good?) compression. Actually, those compression numbers ARE suspiciously high. Haynes gives the compression as 184 standard. If your 190-205 numbers check out, I would suspect some carbon build-up on the heads. I wonder if carbon could also be causing problems with the oil control rings? (Just a guess).

And, are you sure it's not leaking oil, rather than burning it? How much oil is it using, anyway?

White smoke at cold engine startup is usually valve stem seals.

What mileage do you drive a week? This compression is pretty high, stuck oil control rings, worn guides, leaking oil someplace? Check the underside of the chassis for an oil trail. Might try something to remove any carbon deposits, if this engine has them. I would think if burning this much oil the O2 sensors and converter would start having problems.

I put seafoam in the oil on Monday to clean the carbon off the oil rings .Will advise as to the results.

isnt white smoke is usually coolant burning...if there is coolant in your oil there is a much larger problem. blue smoke is oil burning.

basicaly on a 3ee or any motor if you see white smoke its a bad water pump or thermostator blown head gasket really only a blown head gasket will cause the white smoke if its black smoke its you're rings.

ok, now i remember:

white (just white, with no shades of blue or black) = water/coolant
white/blue (looks liek a grey/blue color) = oil
black = running too rich

now we just need to find ways to make green and red smoke for the holidays...

white coolant water burning smoke is not to be confused with a cold engine
