Hey guy's. My name is Kelly (guy, just for those of u who think it's a girl's name), I am from central FL but currently live in Atlanta. I have a big diesel truck and am looking for a commuter car to drive to work that I don't have to worry about getting broken into again and getting all banged up.
There is a '92 Paseo for sale right by my house for 1,000 OBO. It has 189,000 miles, and a manual trans. She say's the oil has been changed every 3k since new. She has been the only owner of the car and has owned it since new, I thought that was crazy. She say's the outside door handle does not work. I've read around here a little and that doesn't seem too hard to fix. She also say's she never uses the A/C because she likes the windows down but the A/C does not work. She did say that the heater works (good for Atlanta right now.) My question is, how hard are these cars to work on? I'm mechanically inclined and work on everything from small lawn mowers to my big military duece and a half. She said it has the original clutch so I'm sure that's about to go soon and I'll probably just replace it before I drive it to Atlanta from FL. How hard are the clutch changes? I'm assuming there may be a leak in the A/C system and all the freon ran out or the compressor is bad. I've also read about bad wiring harness's for the A/C problems, are they a seperate wiring harness or built into the main harness? What other problems are common and are they somewhat easy and cheap to fix. She said it runs and drives great. She mentioned her husband put's about 1/4 of a quart of oil in the engine every 2-3 months and it never blows white smoke. What do yall think and what should I look for? I'm looking to do whatever work it needs before Jan 5th or so before I drive it to Atlanta if I get it. Thanks!
It s a pretty easy car to work on. Get a manual from ebay and it all will be cake. I would suggest a complete gasket and seal kit to start, a tune up, and swap to a synthetic or a high mileage formulated oil. Clutch isn't too bad, the ac compressors fail alot, so you will probably be replacing it. The harnesses in these cars are all pretty intergrated. Welcome to the site and good luck.
Where is a good place to get a gasket set? I'm guessing a few seals could be replaced during the clutch replacement. If the car was taken care of should it still have a while to go even with 189k miles? Last question is; I thought it would be better to just run a thicker weight dino oil as changed to synthetic may cause some leaks. I'll probably run some lucas in it too with all of the miles.
I either get mine from www.ImportPerformanceParts.net or from ebay, depending on the budget I'm under at the time. You can run thicker dino if you like, I just personally prefer Royal Purple.
Thanks man. I saw someone had the manual in digital format on the forum and I'd like to get that some how. I know the clutch will need to be done. I do not have a lift but am pretty handy in improvising. What are the minimum tools to change the clutch and some assosiated tools besides the picks and such. If you put it up on jack stands is that enough? How hard is the trans to support? Thanks!
