Pulling rear main seal

Hey guy's. There's a film of oil coming down from the rear main seal when I took the flywheel off today. I can't find in the online manuals how to pull the thing. Should you cut out as much of the rubber as possible then just pry it out with a flatblade screwdriver or is there a better way to do it? I know if I start cutting the seal I better find a way to get it totally out obviously. With yalls help the clutch job is going pretty good with only common jacks and tool and I'm going to do the timing belt and rear seal while it's all apart. Thanks for all the help so far!

Sorry, I've been posting so much I guess I forogt this section of the forum covers more than Paseo's. It's a 1992 Paseo 5 speed with the 5E-FE. Trying to figure out what seals to replace while the clutch is out and the timing belt.

hey, well there is a online guide where you can basically find anything to fix on any car, here is the link:

Free Online Repair Guide

i looked in there myself.. for 92 paseo they dont show any type of intructions on how to replace a rear main seal. But under 92 tercel they do, it also has pictures. Try to check if it looks the same.. maybe you can use those intructions... dont recommend it since there 2 different engines.. but both share a lot of parts together. Good luck.

Thanks alot for that link. I popped it right out with a flat blade screw driver. Have yall had bad luck with napa or autozone parts rather than the Toyota parts? I have a feeling both of those will tell me to goto Toyota anyways. I bought the clutch kit from Toyota as I figured since the original went 190k miles and still have material than i'll replace it with an identical part. Should I just get the seal from Toyota or will any autoparts place do?

BTW, is it really necessary to remove the rear seal retainer? I see the seals kits come with the seal and retainer gasket. I was careful not to damage the crank when I pried the seal out. Should I remove the retainer and replace the gasket on that as well?
