I am thinking of swaping a 5spd manual into my car which is an automatic now. I figure i should do some engine mods while Im at it. i have a 3E engine in it now. is it possible to get a turbo from a junkyard from like an MR2 or something and put it on my motor or is there a cheap turbo motor I can buy and put in without much trouble. Also for the transmission should i stick with a 1991 tercel transmission or should I get one out of a different car for a better gear ratio?
Any 5-speed Tercel or Paseo tranny will fit perfectly, and they all have the same ratios. A Corolla tranny will give you better ratios but requires alot more work, it would involve swapping the gears from the Corolla tranny into the bellhousing from a Tercel tranny. Not really worth it unless you've already got a manual to start with. Otherwise there's alot more stuff you'd need to buy first.
Easiest turbo engine swap is the 4EFTE. Everything bolts up, you'll need some misc parts, ECU, etc, and you'll need to customize the wiring harness from the 4E with parts from your existing one, but a lot of people have done it and it's definatley the most straightforward.
hey i have the same 1991 tercel yet 4spd. would it be easier for me to swap my tranny to corolla 5spd? and what year corolla you talken bout? one more thing it wouldn't just bolt on right? need a lil custom fabrication to the fitting?

I believe that both tranny's are the same, the limiting factor is the engine. The 3E-E redlines at 5800 while the 5E-FE redlines at 6800.

thats not bangen lol i just wanna see how far i can take this lil 3e-e. you think i'll feel any difference between the 4spd n 5spd except for the fact i have one more gear? lol
The 5spd comes with a lower ratio final drive. 5th gear is overdrive to give the same ratio as a 4spd in high gear. So therefore through the first four gears you get improved accelleration from the 5spd.
