3e Valve Adjustment

How the freak do you adjust the valves on these things?

I took it apart last night thinking it would be a simple 30 min job like on my old 22re engine.... No the rocker are hugs the sides of the valve on 2 sides, like a horse shoe shape around it. WTF!

I'm probably going to cut the tip of my feeler gauge with a dremel so it is only as wide as the valve stem, then it will fit in between the top of the stem and the rocker arm. It should work, anyone else know any tricks to adjusting the valves on these?

it is straight-forward. maybe a set of the offset feeler gauges would help you, but i've used the straight ones for years. the retainer nut is a 12mm and the set 'screw' is a #2 flat head. these engines require a slight drag of the feeler gauge. too tight will follow the cam well, and will also cause premature wear. too loose will cause chatter.

I understand how to do it, I have done it before on other vehicles. On this one though I dont see how you could use a standard feeler gauge.

I'm supposed to measure and adjust the clearance between the rocker arm and valve stem right? Or is it between the set screw and the surface below it that should be measured for correct clearance?

This is what the valve stem and rocker clearance looks like on my 3E engine

I just slipped the feeler under each cam lobe. It seriously takes no more than 20 minutes to get it apart, adjust them, and put it back together. Easy as can be.

Oohhh.......

So you measure the gap between the cam lobe and the rocker arm, not the gap between the valve stem and rocker arm?
