3E running very rich

My tercel is running so rich.... I'm not sure where to start checking for problems...

Any suggestions?

I'm thinking about checking the O2 sensor.

I just bought this car and I can tell it has been royally screwed with... I back checked all the vacuum lines and found 5 that were connected to the wronge ports/sensors.

Is there anything else I should take a look at?

The one that controls the gas to the engine? It sits right next to the fuel pump right? It has 3 vacuum connections to it?

How do I test it to see if it needs to be replaced?

That was one of the things that was hooked up incorrectly when I bought the car. Someone switched up two of the vacuum lines. When I switched them back, OMG what a difference that made

Thanks for the suggestion of the BSVS temp sensor, it makes sense that it could be the culprit. I found out how to test it in the Chilton Manual.

Yes below the fuel pump..... I dont know what it does exactly, I dont know if it actually pumps the fuel from the tank or if it boosts the pressure under certain circumstances or what, but if you look at the bottom of page 4 on the link, Click Here, it shows the BSV on fuel pump. My vacuum diagram labeled it as a "fuel pump" also. I know they are usually in the tank or somewhere near the tank....

That is what you are suggesting I test, right? It would make sense..

After doing some reading and considering the fact that the main jet on the carb has probably been messed with (the plug has been removed, and the lady I bought it from said she took it to someone to have the carb looked at and he obviously didnt know what he was doing because I have found 5 vacuum hoses hooked up wrong)... I have a feeling that the problem could be the main jet is not properly tuned...

I'm also wondering if my low MPG (around 20mpg city) isnt actually caused by something else.... I pulled the spark plugs last night to adjust the valves and they were tan colored, they were no longer black... So I'm not sure what to think of that..

I'm going to do a compression test again tonight and make sure that cylinder #4 is actually getting good compression. My stumbling and bad fuel economy could be a bad valve seat, head gasket or piston ring... Is there someway to figure out which one it is? As far as I can tell it isnt buring much oil or leaking much oil....

So after reading articles and the engines past history in consideration here are the things I think could be wrong;

-Head gasket and/or valve seats and/or piston rings(stumbles at running
temp and bad gas mileage)
-Timing belt is off a notch (the timing light shows it is way off, but when I
try to zero it in the engine runs like crap)
-Bad O-rings on the main jet assembly?(idles slightly rough and bad gas
mileage)
-O2 sensor?(stumbles and bad gas mileage)
-BSVS Temp sensor?(stumbles at running temp and bad gas mileage)

Any way to rule out any of these possibilities? Any other suggestions?

I'm going to work on the engine this weekend, so any suggestions to research would be very helpful.

I have had the car sitting for awhile because I had to order a new idler pully.

while it was sitting I planned on replacing the timing belt but that didnt happen because the parts store gave me the wrong one, FYI there are 3 types of timing belts for the 3E engine....

So I have the car back together and the poor thing runs like crap still.... I dont know wtf is going on....

Any help would be great

It runs seems to bog down when I put my foot on the pedal, however it doesnt seem to do it very badly if at all when i'm going slightly down hill. Its like it bogs down when under load.

Maybe a vacuum sensor?

Also, while I had the timing belt exposed, it was off a notch or two.. or three... the engine will now run smooth when I zero out the timing, however it will not excellerate very well, and backfires(?)

i might be a little late on this. sounds like you might have several issues.

backfire on decelleration and "bogging down" on accelleration is an indication of a vacuum leak. the backfire is definetly a leak. bogging unfortunatly on a 3E motor could also be incorrect porting of lines. its a nightmare i know, but double check your porting.

re-check your cam belt install, by the book. trust it for now and re-check your vacuum ports.

you do know that the fuel pump is mechanical and runs off the cam.
