Question 4age in 94 tercel ?

I've read the engine swap post but I am still in the dark about the 4age swap into a 94 tercel . I think the 4age will bolt to the man trans /so do you still have to notch the frame ?

wont bolt up man, 4A-GE will ony bolt to "A" transmissions. Tercels have "E" block engines.

I've read several times that the 4AGE will bolt right up to the Tercel 3EE / 5EFE transmission. The reason people go with the 4AGE transmission is due to the shorter gear ratios since the 4AGE is a high rpm engine. I can't verify this, but I have definitely read it. One guy said he used corrolla drive shafts, which were the perfect length to position the engine correctly, he used a stock tercel transmission with a 4AGE. He didn't have anything custom made, but he did have to notch the lower part of the frame rail to clear. See a pic for the simple notch (it's not difficult).

I will keep researching. From what I read, the 3EE and 5EFE transmissions do require 1 small modification, that was the exact wording that I read, and with the modification, they work fine. But here is a post off a different forum saying NO WAY... I will simply keep researching because I am considering the 4AGE myself, but don't want a new tranny because I love high gears. I drive on the highway every single fricken day, at 55mph!! I don't like low gears at all.

Hey, I have an 89 tercel and I just removed the engine to try a 4age. I know alot of you guys say that the tranny (4spd) will fit and some say it wont fit. It definitely wont bolt up but there is another problem I see being that the 4age has a pilot bearing and the other corolla transmissions dont use a pilot bearing. Ive heard any A series engine's transmission will work, but is it safe to assume that I must have a fwd 4age transmission? Im not too concerned about the axles because I can weld and balance them."

and ANOTHER POST by chadwithporsche:

"Hey guys, I completed the 4a-ge swap into my tercel ez. I just thought I would tell you definitively what I did and what worked. I used the c50 transmission with an mr2 flywheel. I used the corolla axles and they bolted right up. All I had to do was make custom mounts for the engine. With the c50 transmission and the 4age the crank pulley is about 1/2 inch from the frame and the drivers side frame had to have a pocket cut into it for the transmission to fit into. The exhuast tunnel even lines up with the gap in the oil pan. If I hadnt used a rwd 4age then I guess the water lines would be easier since they are on the passenger side facing the fire wall now. All in all its not that bad of a swap if you have some steel laying around and can weld. Ill try to post some pics if I can figure out how too lol. ( Im a fabricator not a computer whiz). If you guys want to do the swap then just ask me about it because I figured everything out the hard way. Thanks for all your help."

AND ONE MORE BY wedge:

"
Third, is of course the 4A-GE 16v. 1.6l, 16 valve DOHC. Power ranges from 115hp up to 140hp depending on the year. It's a more difficult swap to do. It requires custom made engine mounts, because the engine is of a different family. Luckily the tranny will bolt on, but it requires 1 small modification to be made first."

FROM: http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/ar...c/19926-1.html

------

AND TO ADD TO THE DANG CONFUSION!!!! HERE IS THIS BY Donald:

"The '87-'94 Tercels have a C150 (5spd) or C140 (4spd) manual transaxle. (Haynes manual)

The '92 Paseo, I guess all Paseos have the C150. ('92 Paseo shop manual)"

Here is another post that indicates a 4AGE has the exact same bolt pattern as a Tercel 3EE/5EFE. This is a post from the Corolla forum, however look at what toyotaspeed90 has to say about 4AGE and E series transmissions!

toyotaspeed90

"any A series engine will bolt to any (not 98+ w/o swapping bellhousings) c-series transmission"

"However, the 4agze makes quite a bit more torque, and the C series transmissions tend to have problems with hard launching. You can use an E series transmission (which were available in the MR2 supercharged and the JDM corolla supercharged FWD), but you need to use the axles, flywheel, clutch and PP for that setup. Also, the mounts will need a little bit of work to bolt into the chasis, but nothing difficult whatsoever."
