engine swap 3ac 1983 4wd tercel

Hello to all,
I am new to this forum and in search of some information.
This is the second 1983 4wd tercel I have owned. I really like this car and the gas mileage except for the power. I live in Colorado and it does fine in the flat land but whenever I am in the mountains I need to be concerned about how many people I have in the veichle or else I crawl over the mountain passes. My old tercel had a high altitude carburetor on it and was a Colorado car. The one I presently have is a California model and I even noticed less power than the Colorado model. There is good compression and everything else seems like it is working well with the engine and drive train.
The engine has 190, 000 miles on it.
I am wondering if anyone has any ideas of what other engines I could swap to get more power.
I am also wondering what else I can do with the existing engine to get more power.
I am also willing to modify this engine when it comes time to rebuild it.
I do all my own work.
I thank you all in advance

Tercel engine swap

I have a 1980 tercel hatch that I'm planning on putting a toyota 4AGE into. According to all the info I've seen on the net any of the A series of engines will fit, 1A, 1A-C, 3A, 3A-C, 4A-FE, 4A-GE, 4AGZE, etc. I'm looking at a 20 valve 4AGE producing about 160 horsepower (at the crank). A huge improvement over my current 64 horsepower 3A engine. I don't see a problem with maintaining the 4WD because you don't need to change the tranny. Some of the later model 4AGEs are transversely mounted (side to side) and our cars have the engines longitudinally mounted (front to back) so some modifications have to be made to the intake and or distributor, but if you have some experience working on cars/metal you should be ok doing the swap.

I want to do the same thing to me 82 toyota trecel. My hatch needs some more power. I love the body style I have, so I want to upgrade the engine to a turbo. Can you tell me what year of a engine that will fit into me trecel. Also will a turbo one fit. May you find out the newest engine that can fit. thanks for the help.

Japan You're in luck!!!

As far as modding the existing engine, I would do that and get more power out of it, as opposed to be, no offense stupid, and go with a "better" engine. There are hi-performance parts that Import Performance Parts sells like a TOGA High Volume Oil Pump, Valves, Rod Bearings, Main Bearings, Gaskets, etc. You can also make use of universal parts and adapt them to fit. If you check with K&N Air Filters or Tornado air filters, they both should have a hi-performance filter for your application. As I've been told, Weber has a 32/36 DGEV carb for $400 or you still could go with dual sidedraft carbs like someone on YouTube did with their Toyota 4AC engine. Headers for the engine are available, but you may have to have them custom-made at this point. Pacesetter also sold headers for the 1.6L RWD 4AC, but those will fit the 3AC as well as the ports are all the same for setup, except the head shape. The links to everything are as follows:

IMPORT:

K&N:

Tornado:
http://www.tornadoair.com/carbthrottlemeasurement.htm

Weber:

Pacesetter:
http://www.pacesetterexhaust.com/

pacesetter doesn't stock the headers anymore, but here's a link as to what I think they looked like:
http://www.streetperformance.com/par...1-72c1095.html

They also had a Monza performance catback exhaust system for the wagon:
http://www.sfxperformance.com/parts/PAC881413.htm

I know back in the mid 80's HKS sold an intake manifold that could adapt 40mm sidedraft carbs. They also sold a direct bolt-on turbo kit known as the HT10. I believe HKS of Japan was the only one to market this, judging from a japanese-language book of mine that goes all into cool tuning and dress-up products for the AL20 and 21 Tercel/Corsa/Corolla II, buth a lot of it should also apply to the AL25 4-door 4WD sedan and the AL25 wagon as well....

Anyone know if you can swap the motor from an Echo into the 4wd tercel? Just curious.

It'd take a LOT of work. Much easier to use a 4ag.

Yes corolla rwd. On the site mentioned above I believe they have a few swap threads showing all work involved. The smallport 4age has higher power than the earlier rwd largeports.
